But Can You Eat It?

A handful of new species are discovered every year, but the newest discovery by a US-led team in the South Pacific has resulted in the creation of a new family in the animal kingdom: Kiwaida, after Kiwa, the Polynesian goddess of crustaceans. The crustacean in question has been named Kiwa hirsuta, but is affectionately being called the Yeti Crab.

In what he has described as a "surprising characteristic", the animal's pincers are covered with sinuous, hair-like strands. It seems to reside around some Pacific deep sea hydrothermal vents, which spew out fluids that are toxic to many animals.

The animal is blind, but at this point the scientists aren't even sure if it's a carnivore, or eats the bacteria found on its furry arms.

Paul Clark of the department of zoology at the Natural Histroy Museum said the characteristic strands, known as setae, that cover the crustacean's pincers are similar to those found on Chinese mitten crabs and some other crustacean species.

"Whether these setae are for growing or cultivating bacteria, I've no idea, but that could be one explanation. But it would also be interesting to find out whether there's anything else living in there," Mr Clark told the BBC News website.

And now for the furry crab jokes.

I read about this on yahoo news earlier and found it quite amusing that the animals length was described as "about the size of a salad plate".

I believe mer-boys hang the toxic fluid laced claws from their nipples as a right of passage when becoming a mer-man. Then later use them as ninja stars.
