22 Arrested For Smuggling Drugs in Puppies

When a person decides to become a drug mule, it is their decision. A decision usually made out of desperation, but it's still a choice. But to take an innocent animal, and treat them as something disposable is beyond my comprehension.

I hope they throw away the key.

The Drug Enforcement Administration arrested 22 Colombian nationals for smuggling heroin into the United States via various methods, including surgically implanting the drug into puppies, officials said Wednesday.

At least three puppies died from having liquid heroin packets placed inside them and then being stitched back up, DEA spokesman David Ausiello said.

The fact is, though, if you've ever owned a dog, you'd know that they would risk their lives to save yours. No wonder we feel extra pangs when humans treat them cruelly, more than we would if they were using other animals or even people, but that's the way it is. We make those judgements everytime we eat meat (as the other guy does) or swat a fly, or wear leather.

I didn't mean to make it seem like I was calling you heartless, believe me, I'm not. It just seemed like you guys (more so the guy you responded to) were saying "This is no worse than killing animals for food. We wouldn't care if it were an ugly animal" when that is not the point. The fact is, we treat dogs differently because for hundreds of years they have been different.

Are you completely missing the point? We treat dogs differently because we have
made them out to be different.

Of course it's because of conditioning. Almost everything is...why does it matter why we feel this way? We are raised to believe lots of things, but that doesn't make them any more or less valid reasons.

Do you still believe in Santa Claus? How about the Easter Bunny? Or, the Tooth Fairy? No, of course not. As we grow up we begin to question things, our opinions, beliefs; our ideals change as do our motives. The way you've been raised does not dictate your life's choices or your beliefs. That's a horrible crutch.

I've had many pets throughout my life, and I've loved them all equally. I've also lived on a ranch where I rode horses daily, herded cows and fell asleep to the sound of howling coyotes. Because of these experiences I've learned that all animals have personalities, "souls," if you will.

As a meat-eater, I cannot be so hypocritical as to say that all killing is wrong. My point, I suppose, is that a soul is a soul, a life is a life. Neither you or I have the authority to say which is of more value.

I'd like to try long-pork at least once in my life.
I wouldn't eat a puppy though, again, unless it was a beagle.

No one is saying that it is more valuable.

What I'm saying is that, just as the death of a loved one, or a neighbor, strikes you harder than the death of a stranger, or someone across the globe, so it is with the death of animals like dogs. I would not say that my friend's life is more valuable than that of anyone else, but it would bother me a lot more if she died. Most people have never known a cow, or a horse, or a chicken...but we feel as if we do know our pets. Of course it's because of "conditioning" or whatever, but that doesn't make the feeling any less valid.

How could you say that?! Haven't you learned that it's perfectly acceptable in today's society to devalue the animals that aren't "cute"? I mean, c'mon, man...a cute little puppy-dog's life is far more important than that of a stinky cow. whatever

Yeah...I completely agree with you. If the drug mules were literally mules, people would say, "Oh, that's shitty," and get on with their day. When they're puppies, though, those smugglers have absolutely crossed the line.

It's all fucked up.

kiss kiss kiss

If the drug mules were literally mules, I'd be just as upset about it. There's a big difference between food and using the animals for anything else. If they were eating dogs, it would bother me, but if people eat chickens, then why not dogs.
