To hell with the Oscars: the nominations for the really important awards, the Razzies, were announced today. The annual show "awards" the worst movies of the year. This year, the theme can be summed up as follows: remakes and sequels suck.

Son of the Mask, the sequel to The Mask, but minus its star Jim Carrey, earned eight nominations including worst film and actor for Jamie Kennedy.

Tom Cruise is nominated for worst actor for War of the Worlds, alongside Will Ferrell for Bewitched.

The "winners" will be announced on 4 March, 24 hours before the Oscars.

Other worst film nominees are horror movie House of Wax, starring Paris Hilton, Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo and Dirty Love, which starred ex-Playboy Playmate Jenny McCarthy.

The majority of worst picture nominees also get a mention in the worst sequel/remake category along with Bewitched.

Son of the Mask's nominations also included worst supporting actors for Alan Cummings and Bob Hoskins.

Worst actress nominations included Jessica Alba for Fantastic Four and Into the Blue, Hilary Duff for Cheaper by the Dozen 2 and The Perfect Man and Jennifer Lopez for Monster in Law.

Cruise's fiancee Katie Holmes was nominated for worst supporting actress for Batman Begins, Hilton for House of Wax, Jessica Simpson for Dukes of Hazzard and her sister Ashlee Simpson for Undiscovered.

Holmes and Cruise also feature in the newly created category for "the most tiresome tabloid targets", as do The Simpsons.

I am only disappointed by the inclusion of Will Ferrell - the man can do absolutely no wrong as far as I'm concerned.

Sadly (I don't even know if I should admit this), I went to see the movie in the theatre. It wasn't great, of course, but it was entertaining and Will Ferrell was still damn funny!

Perhaps I am too enamoured to judge fairly.
