Racist Soup for the Homeless

The Soup Nazi has nothing on this racist soup.

Officials in French cities have moved to prevent charity groups with extreme right-wing links serving the homeless with a diet of pork soup and ham sandwiches - food that Muslims and Jews cannot eat for religious reasons. Officials in the northeastern French city of Strasbourg have banned such handouts, and police in the capital, Paris, have closed soup kitchens 'for administrative reasons' in a bid to avert already simmering racial tension.

[...]

The Movement Against Racism and for Friendship between Peoples has urged France's interior minister Nicolas Sarkozy to ban pork soup handouts, arguing that it is deliberately aimed at excluding Muslim and Jewish homeless people. The country's approximately 5 million Muslim population is the largest in western Europe, and forms a large proportion of France's poor immigrant community.

It's funny, really - I always back the French team during World Cup season, just because it's the only team that can actually be called international. The underlying racism in France just plain freaks me out.

Reminds me of the bags of rendered pork fat that were hung on buses in Isreal to discourage suicide bombers.

I agree with that for sure.

Still, this sort of bigoted jackassery isn't quite justified.

I think islam has conditions in it whereby you're allowed to eat non halaal food if you're starving, just like ramadan (spelling is more than likely wrong) you don't have to fast if you're having trouble getting food or are pregnant, unwell etc.

I understand what the French government did but I think a better idea would have been to make them serve something edible by Jewish and Muslim standards as well. The result more than likely would have been the same but at least it wouldn't let these a-holes say the government hates the poor and wants them to starve which you just know they're gonna do.

My uncle served in the gulf war (the first one). They'd pick up iraqi POWs and would toss MREs (meals ready to eat) in the back of the truck because the POWs hadn't eaten anything in days. Didn't matter if it was pork or not, they ate every single one of them.

oh geeze ... political correctness gone overboard again.

If you don't want to eat the free food that someone provides, move on. It's not like these ham sandwhiches are being forced down someone's throat.

I would agree if they weren't serving pig just to be dicks.

*Shakes head* If these governments spent as much effort on the big problems as they do on these little "problems" everyone would be much better off. Waste of energy and taxpayers money. What else can one expect from a government that will send you to jail for "inciting public unrest, ect, ect" for merely expressing an unpopular opinion or trying to have a scholarly debate on things they deem shouldn't be called into question.
And yes, as Allah, Al-Ghafur (The All-Forgiving), Ar-Rahim (The Merciful) will not have His servants go through undue hardship or risk their health frivolously-if they are truly in need, a bowl of bean & bacon soup will not be held against them. So who cares.
And IF a group IS trying to direct to whom their help goes to and who it doesn't go to...well, shucks, if you are 'giving' something away, you SHOULD have the right to decide where YOUR money/goods/services go. If a specific group (I'm sure there is) was catering towards the needs of just muslims, or jews (nothing wrong with that) would there be this outcry, no, of course not, doesn't make for good news.
Makes for an interesting piece of 'news' though. How the nasty French Right have devised zis masterplan to fill ze belliez of poor Muzlimz & Jewz vith ze other vite meat! What kind of monsters does it take to dream up such a horrid scheme. I'm sure Satan is rubbing his palms together, since now one more piece of his puzzle has been put into place by his worldly followers. I'm sure that since pork meat is readily available, keeps well, and is cheap doesn't have anything to do with their choice of it to serve to the starving masses. Maybe someone should investigate who exactly is funding some of the people passing out ham and cheese samiches to the homeless here in Washington, DC.
There MIGHT be a link! This thing might be GLOBAL!
"The Movement Against Racism and for Friendship between Peoples"--I'm sure they have some good people supporting them and working for em...but who is in charge and what is THEIR agenda?..think about it..two sides to every coin. Accuse some of the groups of the "ham" conspiracy to drum up popular support for the rightist parties in the 2006 elections..hmm okay. Like the MARFP doesn't have its own propaganda camgaign and favorite candidates. Thats why I stopped majoring in political science, I couldn't stomach any more garbage that I was being forcefed, was making me sick puke ...so I certainly wasn't going to do the same to the masses by working for some politician who is guided by the dollars from various 'donors' instead of personal conviction.
And in that spirit- pass the bacon. oink

another move towards de-secularising france?
obviously purposefully only serving such foods is wrong, but banning it is wrong too. charitys should be able to work with what they've got.

Wow, what a bunch of arseholes. Hating people is weird, but hating people so much that you'd go to the effort of providing food that the people you hate can't eat is, like, really fucking weird.

It's nice to see that France has actually taken this seriously and not taken the approach that "We're all French, even if you're homeles, so just eat the food."

The UK isn't anywhere near perfect, but I get the idea that we're nowhere near that bad. But then I'm neither black nor Jewish, so what do I know?
