Iron Chef America (Without that Shatner Crap)

I fell in love with Iron Chef. More specifically, I fell in love with Hiroyuki Sakai, one of the most amazing chefs in the entire world. Sakai can (and probably has) de-bone a human hand, make three different types of soup out of it, and serve it to the Iron Chef judges for a perfect score before no one has noticed it missing.
In February, Food Network announced that it would begin production on Iron Chef America.
Iron Chef America will premiere on Friday, April 23rd at 9PM on the Food Network.

The Chefs?
Wolfgang Puck
Mario Batali
Bobby Flay
Masaharu Morimoto (Iron Chef Japanese)

And the chef who is going to kick everyone's ass:

Hiroyuki Sakai (Iron Chef French)

It is interesting to note that Bobby Flay competed on Iron Chef in Japan on January 2nd, 2001. Flay trounced Morimoto 4 to 1. This was the second time Morimoto and Flay have met in the Kitchen Arena (Morimoto previously trounced Flay). At the end of the preparation, Flay threw the cutting board on the floor and stood on the counter, much to the disgust of the Chairman.

That's a pretty impressive list of chefs - they really are some of the top chefs in America (though I might have picked Daniel Boulud for Iron Chef french, or maybe Alain Ducasse.)

Anybody know where it's going to be produced and filmed? Morimoto lives in Philly, Batali and Flay in New York and Puck's in LA. No clue where Sakai lives.

I'd agree with Daniel Boulud, but Alain Ducasse really? I've found him to be the most overrated chef anywhere.

It sooo won't be the same here. Nothing ever is. But I'll watch anyway, even if it does feature Bobby Lame. Think they'll get Mario to wear something other than shorts and Chuck Taylors for the show?!?

Sakai lives in the Fires of Mt. Fuji, only to arise and thrust the flaming sword of the Ages through his enemies. He also lives in the hearts and minds of all innocent children.

I wish they'd use *real* chefs (like Daniel Boulud-- good call) instead of obnoxious overrated tv-personality chefs... (but, of course, real chefs are too busy COOKING to star in tv shows!)

But yeah, I'll probably watch anyway. I love Iron Chef.

oh man. i fucking love iron chef, but it won't be the same without the dubbed giggling of the japanese actress. and english people don't usually say 'tasting this reminds me of a warm spring day on a mountainside, sitting beside a girl in a pretty dress'

No Thomas Keller?

Well Iron Chef doesn't really seem his style anyways..

The worst thing about the Shatner one wasn't him.. but the football style announcing and the judges who said, and I quote "I don't know bub, I think I'd rather have a hamburger, ya know what I mean?"

I pesonally think that Flay's "trouncing" of Morimoto in the re-match was a total cock up. Ultimately Iron Chef is entertainment and so it can be bit like "pro wrestling" at times where the winner is not always the best contestant. One example on how the results can be rigged (beyond the obvious ways, not going to voice an opinion of the "fix" was in on the re-match) was the "assistants" that Flay had. Usually everyone gets assistants from the same pool of unknown players. In the re-match, due to concerns over language difficulties Flay brought his own assistants that happend to be established chefs in their own specialties. This is accentuated by the fact that a week before the show, contestants are given a list of 5 ingredient as possible themes, and the week to request any special ingredients that they want the show to stock. No one thought that they could whip up all those spectacularly original dishes "off the cuff" in one hour and have far more successes rather than lemons right? Anyway, becaue Flay had established chefs in their own specialties, and he had access to them for a week when planning, they could pretty much decide on the menu, and when the theme is announced let them putter away on their own dishes while he showboated the entree.

Anyway, I've had the pleasure of eating Mario Batali's cooking. I used to live one block away from Po's when it opened and I ate there a few times in the first few weeks of it's opening. Mario apparently likes Joy Division because one evening he commented favouably about an Unknown Pleasure T shirt I was wearing... I always went horribly underdressed compared to the other patrons. I didn't know who he was at the time. Many months later I saw him in the Food TV and I remembered him/connected the dots specificly because of the Joy Division comment.

As well I have eaten food prepared by Morimoto a couple of times via the "chef selection" at Nobu. I'm hankering on going to his new restraunt in Philly.

Both Batali and Morimoto are excellent chefs and deserving of their fame.

I've eaten at Flay's restraunt well after he became a celeb chef for lunch during a weekday so I doubt he was in the kitchen at the time. I was not very impressed. This would be more of a reflection on what Flay signs off on as an exectutive chef and restraunt owner than on cooking skills.
