Peter Jackson's Follow-Up to Kong? Halo.

Since Microsoft and Bungie Studios began shopping around the rights to produce a film based on the Halo game franchise (with scripts hand delivered to studios by the Master Chief himself, or himselves as the case may be), fanboy speculation has been rampant. Some was positive, based on the script's writer, Alex Garland, who also wrote 28 Days Later. Some was intensely negative as well, such as rumors claiming Uwe Boll, the infamous cinematic defiler of several video game features, as director. This was later debunked as ridiculous, and recently another rumor was also called ridiculous and widely regarded as false: that Peter Jackson would produce the film. This would be a Halo fanboy's dream, and an excellent move on the part of Bungie, Microsoft, and Universal to help ensure a great film, and thus seemed highly unlikely.

Thing is, it was true.

A few weeks ago we were lucky enough to partner with two tremendous Producers from Universal, Mary Parent and Scott Stuber. In the short time they’ve been on board, Mary and Scott have joined with Peter Schlessel to accomplish unimaginably wonderful things. Example? They’ve secured an Executive Producer to help guarantee the creative integrity and technical excellence of the Halo film.

And that Executive Producer’s name is Peter Jackson.

I’ll give you a second to process. If you’re having a strong, emotional reaction, don’t panic. When I heard the news it took me the better part of a day just to stop smiling.

Yes. The Peter Jackson, Executive Producing the Halo film.

...what really knocks us on our asses is we’re also getting the combined talent of the mighty men and women of WETA in the bargain. From fabricating Covenant weapons to building life-sized Forerunner structures to accomplishing shot after shot of complex live-action/CG integration – simply put, there’s no group of people we’d rather have realize the Halo universe on screen.

Indeed, I don’t think there’s another group that even could.

I wanted to write this movie off as soon as i heard it was on the market. A glimmer of hope has now peeked out. This thing could still be a flop, but after the Rings trilogy, and amid the buzz that King Kong is generating, this could be huge.

goddamn. WETA + Halo... at the absolute least, that's going to be a hell of a pretty movie.

I don't understand why people think PJ is so great. Honestly, with LOTR he had a really solid story to work from, but despite that (or perhaps because of it) every little original piece that he added to the picture sucked.

WETA is what made the LOTR movies good, not PJ.

Hmmm... thing is, the CGI will be so resource intensive even a decent DVD player in a few years time will still chug along at about 25fps...

woo hoo! even though Halo 2's story was kinda weak, if they stick with the first Halo, this could be a first ever awesome video game movie.

Doom comes out pretty soon though, and that might (might) be good. I kinda like the 1st person filming they show on the trailer, assuming it dosen't make me sick in the theater.

frown I was holding out for him doing 'The Lovely Bones'. I would have liked to see him make a movie like 'Heavenly Creatures' again.

I think it is stupid as all hell. It's a
movie; I can see that everytime I play the game. But hey, opinions and assholes I guess. wink

I doubt this will really interfere with that. "Executive producer" really doesn't mean a lot, I think basically all it means is their using his company and he get his name in the credits. He doesn't really have to be involved with the movie himself.
