Seriously, Why Do You Like Will Smith?

I'm really asking. And I'd love nothing more than for you to reply with a detailed list of reasons that shows me exactly what I've been missing.

Obviously, I'm not a fan. But, I'd be happy to put all that aside, for some hard answers. I'll put away my feelings toward his manufactured street-vibe, the bland on-screen energy, the piss poor rap for nine-year-olds. I'm happy to forget all of that, for some answers, some closure and dare I say it, some understanding...

The idea that this humongous gulf separates me (and a few others) and the rest of the planet, has become far too unsettling to manage. How can we be so different? Are we not both flesh and bone? Do we not bleed when stuck and laugh when 30 Rocked? I understand hatred, selfishness, murder, even... but not this.

I've got to know. Why do you welcome his middle-of-the-roadness with open arms? Why do you line his pockets for the chance to witness his "fast-talking" hilarity? Am I asking too much? Being too picky? I mean, we've seen examples of funny people. People who can act, and act well. It can be done, there's countless movies that prove it. Why isn't he also expected to do these things?

Logistically, the idea that he has something to blackmail every single person on Earth with, sounds ridiculous. I'm begining to wonder if I'm wrong. Did Will discover that we were all descended from slugs? Is that the secret he swore to keep, in exchange for a career saying, "Oh, hell no."

This isn't me being a sarcastic dick. I mean, sure, that's part of it. But beyond that, I'd like this to be different than the usual "me mocking something, some of you agreeing and some of you attacking back" thing. At the end of this, I'd either like you to see the error of your ways, or, I'd like to be convinced.

I'll even do my best to get you started. I can't think of more than a few half-baked reasons, not even enough for a proper list, but here's what I got.

- He's tall and good looking. Is that it? I'll concede those two points, but, doesn't it take more? I mean nobody's lining up to see any Ted McGinley movies. (Yeah, I know. Apparently I'm also in need of examples of tall, good looking people.)

- People enjoy the slick, wise-cracking black guy character. That's true, but, aren't there plenty of actual black guys available? It's not like they haven't invented Chris Tucker yet. Or Method Man. Or, the self-described "cocky black chaeffuer from Die Hard. That guy was awesome, and I'd lay down at least fifty bucks that says anything Smith can do, that guy could do just as well. And that includes his Ali impression.

- People have a misguided, nostalgia-based fondness for his crappy sitcom. This group is a few hundred people at best, not enough to account for his worldwide dominance.

- Most people are dumb and ask very little of their entertainment. And they like people who smile at them. Hmmm. That's impossible, right?

That's all I could come up with. Tell me I'm wrong. Show me I'm wrong. I'm begging you. Explain this sadistic hold he has over you... or send him away.

Soon he will have ruined one of my favorite books, I Am Legend. It's a matter of days now, and there's nothing we can do to stop it, this time... I'm asking you now, where does it end? When do we say enough?

TheCoolerKing is also wondering why they seem to have taken all the vampires out of "I Am Legend" and replaced them with the monsters from "28 Days Later."

He was a well-known hip hop artist long before "Summertime" and the television show, and people similarly still liked Run DMC even after all the shitty reunion albums they put out. Is it worth criticizing a cheesy comedic actor/musician for a few half-hearted chuckles?

Maybe it's just me, but I wasn't exactly waiting for someone to take that pretentious fucker Will Smith down a peg or two. I mean, talk about low-hanging fruit.

i'm not a die-hard will smith fan either, but i can certainly appreciate his contributions to the multiple facets of the entertainment industry.

So far we've got a lot of people apologising for his music, acting ability and film choices, while touting the fact that he seems like a nice guy and devoted family man.

Apparently every nice guy dad in America is being grossly underpaid.

we agree on a lot of things cooler king, however, you do realize that you have a movie in your top ten staring jeniffer lopez, right?

every actor, even the greatest in the world have made bad flicks

brando did The Island of Dr. Moreau and do you remember
anthony hopkins in Mission Impossible: 2? least not forget Clint Eastwood in any of those damn monkey movies...don't even get me started on the shit that Nicholas Cage has spewed upon the world

and if you're going to single out Will Smith, you have to single out every other actor who is even bigger then him that has no right to be. *cough cough* Tom Cruise *cough cough*

I guess I can't explain explicitly why I like him. I guess that I find him charming.

He is kind of dreamy....now that I think about it.

The guy just seems very amiable. In terms of acting, he's very hit or miss. I HATED him in Pursuit of Happyness. I wanted to shoot myself in the face halfway through the movie because it was ridiculously sappy and predictable. But I quite liked him as Ali.

Now I'm watching old Will Smith music videos and I have to say it brings out a sweet sort of nostalgia.

That's odd, I clicked on your page and was immediately brought to a photo of you flipping off Survivor: China... Have you "met" Jeff Probst and the cast? How dare you mock them merely because they don't meet your standards of reality TV. What about their contribut-

By your logic, if I went to a shitty dentist would I not be allowed to mention it unless I knew him in his personal life? I never said Will Smith was a scumbag, just that he's terrible at his job. Which, happens to be the truth.

So far we've got a lot of people apologising for his music, acting ability and film choices, while touting the fact that he seems like a nice guy and devoted family man.

haha, that's not what i meant by the survivor thing. i love the show with my entire reality-tv-devoted heart, i was just pissed that aaron got voted off.

and yes, every nice dad in america is being underpaid. i definitely back that.

believe me, i'm not saying that i can't be hypocritical or that my argument, if you'll call it that, was fool-proof. anything but, i'm sure. mine wasn't a well thought out or developed article as yours was.

i simply meant that respect is due and i don't very much appreciate when people get bashed for doing nothing wrong, at the very least indirectly. chances are, will smith has probably never sat down and thought, "you know, i'm going to make another rap record because i know how much it will piss this guy on suicidegirls off..." anything he's done to anger you was unintentional as far as we know. i'm not saying that you have to change your opinion (because that would just be silly), but i don't see how people can talk so much bad about someone or something like that, like how will smith "seemed" to maintain himself while making himself a household name. how said shitty dentist may have messed up with you, but had worked and studied orthodontics for years for the ability to even possibly become a shitty dentist. how survivor managed to stand the test of time through fifteen seasons for the opportunity to piss off fans with certain tribal councils.

you really don't have to listen to me, though. i didn't figure you would, i'm not some big angry person who's trying to tell you how ridiculously wrong you are.

i, like you, was just stating an opinion.

Outryder are you being sarcastic? I can't even tell... Anyway, my responses in easy to read italics

1. There are maybe 3 mainstream guys who do this, and last time I checked, they were gangster rappers. Is his rapping even up for debate? You can't be defending that aspect of his career.

I can't?? I thought I just did. And what do you know you weren't asking about "Why do you like these three guys?". If "someone else is doing it" is your final answer then it's a pretty weak one. Plus, it's gangstA. Coolio said.

2. That's the reason, because he's not Kanye West people watch his movies? No one's arguing for his music.

Kanye West whiny. People no like. Will Smith no whiny. People like. His music has little -if any- social commentary, it's meant for you to play while driving places you need to go on any given day and not even remember what you were listening to or go "Hmmm, I wonder what 'Miami' is about??"

4. Not asking him to be a life coach, merely an actor who doesn't, by your own admission, make sucky films.

There's more than 3 other mainstream actors already doing that, so if he started doing the same thing that probably wouldn't fit in with your reply to number 1. And also, refer to number 9.

5. No, he didn't step aside, he just made a bad call.

That was a joke. As in "The whole Star Wars new trilogy was a big...", not every single thing in this list has to be dead serious. whatever

6. Aside from Alec Baldwin, who are all these kid-hating dads?

If you please would read that particular point you'd find that I never said "as opposed to the other asshole celebrity fathers who don't like their kids" but since you want examples of bad parenting: Michael Jackson, Pelé, Woody Allen, David Hasselhoff, Britney Spears, Jon Voight, Ja Rule. Will Smith at least has made an effort to be a good father. People like that.

7. Yes, he's handsome, I conceded that.

Agreed

8. He may seem nice but that's hardly unique. And speaking Spanish in Mexico is called pandering.

And once again, this is not about who else does it. It's also called trying to connect with your local fans directly rather than just looking at the interviewer with condescending eyes knowing that someone wll translate your words of wisdom to the ignorant masses.

9. Are you now proving my point?

No, in fact it was an key part to the answer of your question. Why do people like him? Because he aims to please the crowd, not a select handful of individuals with higher expectations.

10. Disagree

Fail tongue.

I'm rather in agreement with the OP; I've never seen anything that impressive come from this guy, and thus I am disappointed that he's in 'I am Legend'. There's a few celebrities that wouldn't leave me starstruck if I caught them in the VIP at a club in Miami including will smith, kid rock (sry but the white trash image doesn't impress me), and any/all of the infamous party girls like miss lohan and ms spears. Those that would leave me gasping for breath include russell crowe, eva longoria, danny devito, etc, because they dont completely suck ass on screen. Believe me, if I'm not raiding ssc in world of warcraft or browsing sg, I'm watching movies, so I know there's some actors that just arent believable. Whenever I've seen Will Smith in a movie, the whole time I'm thinking he's roleplaying as himself, not that he is who he's attempting to be. The whole point of acting is being able to play as someone else; maybe the problem is he's always chosen to be in movies where he gets to be himself and never go outside of that box.

I dunno man, I just don't see the point of this article at all. I don't like South Park, so should I go ask the legions of people that do to convince me why I should like it? No, I just don't watch it.

Different strokes, sir.

I like Will Smith - he amuses me. How do you not like someone who throws a temper tantrum and punches out an alien, then proceeds to drag him around and continue to tell him off even though he's unconcious?

That was funny shit, man...

I watch Will Smith when I want to watch a movie that will keep my attention, not require a whole lot of thought, and generally speaking, amuse me. Independance Day, Men In Black 1 & 2, Bad Boys, etc., were all movies that I quite enjoyed. They made me laugh without resorting to complete idiocy or toilet humour, which is very rare nowadays.

For the record, I have nothing against toilet humour... but it's nice to have a break from it sometimes.
