Seriously, Why Do You Like Will Smith?

I'm really asking. And I'd love nothing more than for you to reply with a detailed list of reasons that shows me exactly what I've been missing.

Obviously, I'm not a fan. But, I'd be happy to put all that aside, for some hard answers. I'll put away my feelings toward his manufactured street-vibe, the bland on-screen energy, the piss poor rap for nine-year-olds. I'm happy to forget all of that, for some answers, some closure and dare I say it, some understanding...

The idea that this humongous gulf separates me (and a few others) and the rest of the planet, has become far too unsettling to manage. How can we be so different? Are we not both flesh and bone? Do we not bleed when stuck and laugh when 30 Rocked? I understand hatred, selfishness, murder, even... but not this.

I've got to know. Why do you welcome his middle-of-the-roadness with open arms? Why do you line his pockets for the chance to witness his "fast-talking" hilarity? Am I asking too much? Being too picky? I mean, we've seen examples of funny people. People who can act, and act well. It can be done, there's countless movies that prove it. Why isn't he also expected to do these things?

Logistically, the idea that he has something to blackmail every single person on Earth with, sounds ridiculous. I'm begining to wonder if I'm wrong. Did Will discover that we were all descended from slugs? Is that the secret he swore to keep, in exchange for a career saying, "Oh, hell no."

This isn't me being a sarcastic dick. I mean, sure, that's part of it. But beyond that, I'd like this to be different than the usual "me mocking something, some of you agreeing and some of you attacking back" thing. At the end of this, I'd either like you to see the error of your ways, or, I'd like to be convinced.

I'll even do my best to get you started. I can't think of more than a few half-baked reasons, not even enough for a proper list, but here's what I got.

- He's tall and good looking. Is that it? I'll concede those two points, but, doesn't it take more? I mean nobody's lining up to see any Ted McGinley movies. (Yeah, I know. Apparently I'm also in need of examples of tall, good looking people.)

- People enjoy the slick, wise-cracking black guy character. That's true, but, aren't there plenty of actual black guys available? It's not like they haven't invented Chris Tucker yet. Or Method Man. Or, the self-described "cocky black chaeffuer from Die Hard. That guy was awesome, and I'd lay down at least fifty bucks that says anything Smith can do, that guy could do just as well. And that includes his Ali impression.

- People have a misguided, nostalgia-based fondness for his crappy sitcom. This group is a few hundred people at best, not enough to account for his worldwide dominance.

- Most people are dumb and ask very little of their entertainment. And they like people who smile at them. Hmmm. That's impossible, right?

That's all I could come up with. Tell me I'm wrong. Show me I'm wrong. I'm begging you. Explain this sadistic hold he has over you... or send him away.

Soon he will have ruined one of my favorite books, I Am Legend. It's a matter of days now, and there's nothing we can do to stop it, this time... I'm asking you now, where does it end? When do we say enough?

TheCoolerKing is also wondering why they seem to have taken all the vampires out of "I Am Legend" and replaced them with the monsters from "28 Days Later."

Will has gone from a little dorky kid in philly to being one of the biggest, most powerful people in Hollywood. And he did it all by just being himself. He didn't sell out and become the "ghetto rapper" or "vulgar black comedian" that you stereotypically see.

Will Smith is the goddamn man. And i bet most people will agree with me.

I like Will Smith because he seems to be a pretty decent guy and that's rare in the real world, let alone in the Hollywood scene. From what I understand, his grandmother asked him to not be like all the other rappers and say "fuck" or be degrading toward women. He told her he wouldn't and as far as I know, he kept his word on that. It's a rare person who stick to their word these days, especially against such criticism as you provide. Nonetheless, he continues to do so and many people know it. Generally, most people like other people who they know keep their word and are essentially a good person.

i can't stand rants like this.
you've never met him personally, it's ridiculous that you find him unworthy of his success because he doesn't meet whatever standards you have for him.
i'm not a die-hard will smith fan either, but i can certainly appreciate his contributions to the multiple facets of the entertainment industry.

I like him because he makes Sinbad look like a genius. He also makes Sinbad look like a black man.

I merely enjoy his acting in movies such the Pursuit of Happiness and Independence Day. I don't really think he's that great in anything else.

in hollywood you would have to consider him one of the rarities. he's deffinetly not the a-proto typical ass munch you hear about yelling at people on sets and having messy fights with the wife. its quite refreshing not having to hear about someone whos just not taking their shit to seriously and they just have fun with what they are doing and that really shows in his movies and life.

as for your feelings on "i am legend" anything at all is unfounded and find the script.im sure its floating on the internet somewhere (i forgot where i found mine) but it was actually pretty decent. and considering the final movie is always a change from the script its looking to be a pretty good flick without his usual mannerisms people have come to expect from him.

fresh prince is fucking dope by the way....dont ever diss the prince smile

The reasons why people like him, including me, I think are related to

1. The fact that he's not out there trying to look tough and gangsta.
2. He doesn't go all whiny emo rapper like that other guy (what's his face, the one who got pissed at MTV & their awards) who thinks everybody's out to get him.
4. His movies may be sucky and he is not the best actor out there, but fuck, he's an entertainer not a life coach on video.
5. He stepped aside to let Keanu Reeves play the lead in an ultra successful movie and its shitquels.
6. People tend to like a guy who loves his kids and is not afraid to look corny in the process.
7. He did look good in the black suit.
8. He is a nice guy. Whenever he has been here in Mexico, he at least tried to speak in spanish. All broken and bad and shit but he tried. And he didn't refuse to sign shit for kids and grown ups alike.
9. He's completely populist. Will Smith doesn't care to impress a fancy audience with musical or theatrical background and knowledge, he probably won't release a symphonic version of any of his singles or albums (like, say, Metallica), he just delivers the so-so goods and if you like it, so much the better for him, you and everyone.
10. Air Fresh Shoes man. Air Fresh Shoes.

Pwned, I just remembered why I like Will Smith, thank you Ferretbite, the darkside almost had me... No but seriously I was so taken back by the audacity of this article that I really couldn't remember any of that, and I retract my previous statements... It's been a weird day to say the least...

Now I'm gonna go get drunk with my friends and sing the Fresh Prince theme song, YES!

Outryder are you being sarcastic? I can't even tell... Anyway, my responses in easy to read italics

1. The fact that he's not out there trying to look tough and gangsta. There are maybe 3 mainstream guys who do this, and last time I checked, they were gangster rappers. Is his rapping even up for debate? You can't be defending that aspect of his career.
2. He doesn't go all whiny emo rapper like that other guy (what's his face, the one who got pissed at MTV & their awards) who thinks everybody's out to get him. That's the reason, because he's not Kanye West people watch his movies? No one's arguing for his music.
4. His movies may be sucky and he is not the best actor out there, but fuck, he's an entertainer not a life coach on video. Not asking him to be a life coach, merely an actor who doesn't, by your own admission, make sucky films.
5. He stepped aside to let Keanu Reeves play the lead in an ultra successful movie and its shitquels. No, he didn't step aside, he just made a bad call.
6. People tend to like a guy who loves his kids and is not afraid to look corny in the process. Aside from Alec Baldwin, who are all these kid-hating dads?
7. He did look good in the black suit.Yes, he's handsome, I conceded that.
8. He is a nice guy. Whenever he has been here in Mexico, he at least tried to speak in spanish. All broken and bad and shit but he tried. And he didn't refuse to sign shit for kids and grown ups alike. He may seem nice but that's hardly unique. And speaking Spanish in Mexico is called pandering.
Are you now proving my point?
10. Air Fresh Shoes man. Air Fresh Shoes.Disagree

because he seems unscathed by his popularity (whether deserved or not) and he is a family man -that is fucking sexxxy. not to mention even though his rapping sux ass he refuses to boost his myspace hits (or however celebs nowadays gauge their popularity) by cursing, or being sexually explicit in his lyrics. a man of moral conviction is sexxxy as hell. and im not saying this cuz im a bible beating witch burner.... i swear constantly and LOVE mickey avalon and other grotesque and explicit artists..... i simply dont hate on the ones that arent.
i dont care that his acting is questionable cuz hes easy on the eyes.
and his sitcom is an american classic just like saved by the bell -which is just as dopey and equally as hyped.

fuckn A ill take some of that brown sugar any day : )

That's odd, I clicked on your page and was immediately brought to a photo of you flipping off Survivor: China... Have you "met" Jeff Probst and the cast? How dare you mock them merely because they don't meet your standards of reality TV. What about their contribut-

By your logic, if I went to a shitty dentist would I not be allowed to mention it unless I knew him in his personal life? I never said Will Smith was a scumbag, just that he's terrible at his job. Which, happens to be the truth.

So far we've got a lot of people apologising for his music, acting ability and film choices, while touting the fact that he seems like a nice guy and devoted family man.

Apparently every nice guy dad in America is being grossly underpaid.

You don't have to like or understand why Will Smith is popular. You need to understand why he is popular. The simplest of simple answers was in your own rant: "middle-of-the-roadness." Have you never noticed how "middle-of-the-roadness" our entertainment is? How "middle-of-the-roadness" are our politicians? How "middle-of-the-roadness" are our lifestyles? How "middle-of-the-roadness" everything is in the US? Every aspect of the new (new is key here) american dream is about not pushing boundaries, but catering to the masses; as many of them as you can! This website is a testament to that in the fact that it doesn't placate to the majority. It is what it is; like it, love it, or hate it. Suicide Girls is devoted to beauty in the world. That may be physical, mental, emotional, or any other -al you want. It is for the people, by the people. Our politics and entertainment may think they are about that as well, but in the end both are business and we are left to wallow in it.

Will Smith? I don't know him so I can't say I like him or not. He has acted in some movies that I find entertaining (some good) and has acted in some that I find abysmal. That's entertainment! ... That's life!
