Too Much Michael Moore? (Not a Fat Joke)

There have been several SG articles dealing with Moore recently.

FearTheReaper examined whether or not his latest "important message" was worth checking out.

While a week or so back Hunter looked at his battles with not only his waistline but PETA as well. Hmm... PETA vs. Michael Moore... If your enemy's enemy is your friend, well... Uh, let's just say I was hoping for a double knockout.

My approach will be to be to point out yet another example of his obnoxious, overblown, self-aggrandizement.

Michael Moore decided to unveil his new healthcare documentary, "Sicko," in a locale few studio executives have ever visited: skid row.

On Monday night, Moore and the distributor, the Weinstein Co., screened "Sicko" on the street in front of the Union Rescue Mission. About 200 clients of the mission and other homeless people attended the screening...

Hahaha, oh Michael, you've done it again! Using the down-on-their-luck dregs of skid row, the people on the absolute lowest rung of society, as props for your movie premiere. Bravo! What a genius you are! Man, when people here about this... The very idea that you juxtaposed the homeless with your film about healthcare... What a great comment on us. So rich, the irony!

Oh those stupid white men, you've really stuck it to them... Why don't those who hate you see your brilliance? You needed to parade these poor bastards around to make an important point about how people need healthcare... and movies. You showed them how punk rock, guerrilla film-maker you are!

About 200 clients of the mission and other homeless people attended the screening which included free popcorn and sodas.

Free popcorn! See, haters? He didn't even charge them. He didn't have to do that. The publicity he got from those homeless fucks doesn't pay for popcorn. Michael Moore pays for popcorn.

In an impassioned introduction, Moore noted that one of the film's scenes, in which a hospital dumps an indigent patient on skid row, unfolded right where the movie was showing.

Why there he is, right over there, eating popcorn! Imagine someone dumping an indigent person off downtown, when they could have fed them soda and put them on TV before leaving them in the exact same condition they were in when he arrived. The horror.

Said Moore: "I am so glad to do a real Hollywood premiere right here on the streets of downtown Los Angeles."

Man of the people. Not like those politicians he hates, always manufacturing photo-ops before running off to their rich friends. A glitzier premiere occured in hobo-free Beverly Hills the night after the skid row screening.

TheCoolerKing would like to point out that this piece is about as fair to its subject as Michael Moore has ever been to his.

It was a publicity stunt. If you're reporting on it, it obviously was successful.

Good on Moore, any publicity is good publicity when it comes to trying to get people back on the tracks.

So...
Is your conclusion that it's worse to be a rich, white, self aggrandising fat American who highlights 'the other side of the argument' than to be a rich, white, self aggrandising fat American who ignores it?

Of course he makes a lot of himself.
But he often also has a decent point.

Is hypocricy worse than inaction; discuss.

Of course it's a publicity stunt. That's what you do when you release a new movie... you drum up publicty.

Say what you want about his antics; he contiues to expose the fucked up reality of the so called "american way." So what's a little whoring of oneself if its for the betterment of this nation. I think there should be more people in hollywood like him.

Yes, how dare a private citizen not fix the problem he has exposed to us?! Harumph, harumph, harumph!!

Say what you want about him, at least he did something. You know, other than bitch and moan about it on a porn site.

Thanks for the pithy commentary, CoolerKing!
Crap. Seems I've developed either sarcasm or a lisp.
I hope my insurance doesn't consider it a pre-existing condition.

OK. Now you are going to bitch and moan about the "bitching and moaning?"

I would think that Moore putting the issue in such a stark spotlight would obligate him to do a little more than give free popcorn and soda to homeless people as a publicity stunt. Not to say that I think he's a bad guy or that he isn't a journalist of sorts, but why not dedicate some of the money made from this film to actually helping people with no health insurance -- after all he would have had no subject without them. I am not a major filmmaker exploiting homeless people to drum up support for my movie then jaunting off to unHolywood for an exclusive suare the next night. I am Joe Citizen who spends an obscene portion of his income making insurance fatcats fatter for a product that chances are I will not use until I could have saved as much money...

So are 200 of the people in Union Rescue Mission, and homeless in attendance on skid row because of healthcare? Not that they don't deserve access to healthcare, it's just that it gave me the impression that they're being portrayed as being there as a result of healthcare.

well, TheCoolerKing, as i'm sure it WASN'T completely evident to us before that Moore is an asshole who uses people for his own personal gain, i see it now, as well as the fact that in light of this publicity stunt, you've helped actualize Moore's dream of more fame (infamy?) and money by snidely commenting on it. Bravo whatever

Michael Moore did something? Oh he lined his own pockets with the "fad" of the week. Did he donate all the money from the movie to those that don't have healthcare( and keep $30,000 salary; so he will be above the poverty line)? America is the most generous nation on earth. We love to help others on our own terms. Yes there is a heath care problem, but who has the answer? No doctors do. No politiction does. We can all bitch untill we are blue in the face.......nothing is gonna get done! Michael Moore is making money off of the "I wanna feel good crowd". I know Moore gave $20,000 to some watch dog guy, but what about the rest of the profits from the film(s)? Show me an answer that won't screw up our economy and still give me a choice in who provides my health care.

If you actually think Moore personally makes or controls the bulk of profits from his movies rather than each film's production companies, equity participants, international sales agent and distributors respectively, you first need a lesson in basic entertainment financing before you begin to have something resembling a salient point here.
