Pro Wrestler Kills Wife, Son, Self

The suicide death of former WWE world champion Chris Benoit accompanied by the shocking double-murder of his wife and son in the suburbs of Atlanta last weekend has devastated the sports-entertainment business.

Benoit, one of World Wrestling Entertainment's biggest stars, had been scheduled to compete in a live event on Saturday night and at the WWE "Vengeance" pay-per-view event on Sunday. He missed both shows and his failure to appear was at first blamed by WWE on "personal reasons."

According to WWE, individuals within the company received "curious text messages" from Benoit after which law enforcement officials were alerted and a gruesome discovery made at his Fayetteville, Georgia home -- Benoit had killed his wife and child and then hung himself in his weight room.

From WWE.com
"Authorities representing the Sheriff’s Department initially had a difficult time entering Benoit’s new Fayetteville home Monday afternoon, which had been guarded by two large German Shepherds roaming freely around the property. Once authorities entered the residence, they quickly located the bodies of Benoit, Nancy and Daniel. WWE was notified of the discovery at approximately 4 p.m."

Those who knew Chris Benoit described him as a dedicated and motivated athlete continually performing at the top of his game. Fellow superstars joined together to pay tribute to the Canadian-born "Rabid Wolverine" on Monday via WWE RAW on USA Network.

By Tuesday, much of the shock of the situation had worn off and some fans were openly questioning the backstage reality of professional wrestling -- tough travel, grueling training and the entertainment lifestyle. One fan commented to the Slam Sports website:

"For some reason, and this is the reason I felt compelled to write this posting, I have an image of an anguished, very alone, very despairing person stuck in my mind, sitting in a big house void of life. Again, I do not know the full circumstances surrounding these deaths, but several different scenarios do come to mind. Relationship problems obviously surface as the forerunner, but whatever the reason, three people died this past weekend."

As events unfolded and more facts revealed about Benoit's off-screen behavior, allegations of domestic abuse and the speculation of performance-enhancing drug abuse have surfaced in some media circles.
Benoit and wife Nancy Daus -- once known in wrestling as "Woman" -- were engaged in 2000, three years after Benoit feuded with her then-husband Kevin Sullivan in the now defunct World Championship Wrestling

In years past, former wrestlers such as Gov. Jesse Ventura, Rowdy Roddy Piper and Bret Hart -- himself a victim of tragedy when his brother Owen fell to his death from atop an arena during a WWE event -- have all made suggestions alluding to the formation of a union for professional fighting athletes.

On Tuesday, World Wrestling Entertainment removed much of the content pertaining to Benoit from its website.

Yeah he can kiss his legacy goodbye! 22 years of hardwork and dedication pissed away by one totally insane act. An I don't buy into the whole "Roid Rage" scenario thats just an excuse for a man who killed a defenseless child and a woman who was bound at her hands and feet. Its unforgivable....

Another blemish on Professional Wrestling....

This was just posted on WWE.com in the last little while. Take what you wish from it, but it does all seem quite disturbing.

STAMFORD, Conn., June 26, 2007 - World Wrestling Entertainment is stunned and saddened by the details released by local authorities concerning the double homicide-suicide involving Chris Benoit, his wife, Nancy, and his son, Daniel.

However, WWE is concerned with the sensationalistic reporting and speculation being undertaken by some members of the media following the press conference held by the Fayette County Sheriff's Department and the District Attorney. During the press conference, the investigating authorities made the following points, all of which run contrary to the media speculation that "roid rage" was a factor in the senseless murders and suicide:

1. The authorities stated that all drugs found in the house were believed to be legal prescriptions.

2. Steroids were not, and could not, be related to the cause of death (asphyxiation). Authorities had no factual basis to speculate as to Benoit's state of mind, and rightly did not do so.

3. Toxicology tests have not even been completed, so there is no current evidence that Benoit even had steroids or any other substance in his body. In that regard, on the last test done on Benoit by WWE's independently administered drug testing program, done on April 10, 2007, Benoit tested negative.

4. The physical findings announced by authorities indicate deliberation, not rage. The wife's feet and hands were bound and she was asphyxiated, not beaten to death. By the account of the authorities, there were substantial periods of time between the death of the wife and the death of the son, again suggesting deliberate thought, not rage. The presence of a Bible by each is also not an act of rage.

5. WWE strongly suggests that it is entirely wrong for speculators to suggest that steroids had anything to do with these senseless acts, especially when the authorities plainly stated there is no evidence that Benoit had steroids in his body, pending the toxicological reports, and that they had no evidence at this time as to the motive for these acts.

WWE is continuing to monitor the ongoing investigation being conducted by local authorities.

Horrible, just horrible. I mean, to me Benoit personified old-school wrestling. He was technically perfect, but with more than enough edge and raw energy to make his matches fun and exciting. But all of that doesn't really matter anymore. it's all gone. His legacy is a double-murder. He's a child killer.

This story was a hell of a roller-coaster. From first hearing of the news on the internet, and the initial shock that goes along with that. The disbelief. Then watching Raw last night, and seeing those videos. Chilled me to the bone. But then before I could even digest all of that, we start to hear rumblings of it being a "double-murder suicide from within the house." Now it's crystalized like this. A lot of his friends had a tough time putting into words what he meant to them as a friend, and how they reacted to reports of his death. A few of them just came out said they loved Chris Benoit. I can only imagine how tough it it would be for them to comment on the story as we see it now. It's probably near impossible.

BTW: I was going to point out what the WWE said about the crimes being slow and deliberate, which really doesn't seem conducive to a 'roid rage incident.

You know, I really admired his on-screen performances, but I seem to be seeing more and more wrestlers dying at fairly young ages...

as the original article says, you really start to wonder....

When I heard about the circumstances on the news, my first reaction was (cleaned up) dang it, I really liked the guy, but that is just wrong....There is no excuse for what they are saying he did no matter what the reason...

everyone knows wrestling is fake... he'll come back to life on the next pay-per-view with a new moniker. Perhaps "The Roidless Rage" to promote anti drug campaigns.

I wonder if WWE should have waited before airing a 3 hour tribute to Chris Benoit until the whole story came out. I live in Hawaii, so RAW was on a 5 hour tape delay and by that time I had already heard it was most likely a murder suicide. I turned on RAW out of curiousity and couldnt sit through 5 minutes of them paying tribute to a guy who just killed his wife and son...

To say that is in bad taste is an understatement.

I know that the WWE have a tendancy to milk real-life events (look at the entire Eddie Guerrero thing that happened after his death) but I think that even that would be far over the line for Vince McMahon to go for.

The unfortunate truth is that although Benoit was a great wrestler, he has done something truely despicble. Although it may look bad that they used their three hour edition of Raw to 'celebrate' the life of Benoit, they did the right thing given the amount of information available to the world at the time. Distancing themselves from him on WWE.com is the right thing to do given the circumtance, and going on with their planned ECW and Smackdown tapings is exactly the right thing given the circumstances.

Two interesting notes are that when the news first broke TNA Wrestling's website had a note up paying tribute to Benoit which has since been taken down, and that we should be taking note of the opinions of the people that really knew him. Lance Storm hasn't updated his website, but I reckon he will before long, and the latest blog from Jim Ross may well be a good indicator of how people within WWE and the wrestling community at large are feeling.

Truly sad. He was easily one of the most respected men in his field and now that's all gone. What the fuck could make someone to take their own child's life?

Regarding WWE airing the tribute show, well what else were they supposed to do? At the time it was aired the details weren't made public and they had a locker room full of guys who just lost a friend. I'm sure all of the guys that commented on how much they respected Benoit professionally and personally would have a much different take today. Most likely with even more sadness and confusion than the segments that were taped yesterday.

I've just been pointed to the one truely negative comment from within the industry. The unfortunate thing is given what I've already said here, I kind of agree with what former WCW commentator Scott Hudson had to say.

Scott Hudson: Chris Benoit's Fourth Victim
Not a human victim. As the beautiful Nancy and the young Daniel lay dead and dying in their new home, Chris was slowly suffocating another victim as he ended his own life. He killed what shred of innocence was left in wrestling. I know that%u2019s akin to lamenting the loss of integrity in the legal profession - but there was a little bit left.

The innocence was found in the locker room, in a backstage handshake and embrace between two athletes, in ribbing among the members of the fraternity. As kayfabe went the way of the dinosaur, the wall of insulation constructed from the inside out by those in the business grew higher. One knew that any casual hotel lobby conversation with a fan or radio show guest shot would be on the internet in mere minutes. Nothing wrong with that. But we knew that the only people you could trust - albeit very little - were those in the locker room with you. They knew. They understood. The pain. The travel. The pain. The loneliness. The pain. The frustration. That common thread linked everyone. They knew you and you knew them. Maybe not personally - but you just knew. Everyone around you began in small buildings with even smaller pay-offs and much larger aches and bruises. We were all on the same team - no matter what.

Suicide is an awful thing. Whether it%u2019s the coward%u2019s way out is a matter for the bumper sticker writers. That person is still just as dead. Wrestling has had its share of intentional and unintentional suicides. Insert the word murder in place of suicide and that statement rings just as true. But murder/suicide? Of a child? Like he has so often - Chris Benoit raised the bar.

Double-crosses occur in every profession without exception. Salesmen, attorneys, entertainers, bureaucrats - makes no difference. Wrestlers included. But like the old saw dictates regarding families, %u201CWe may fight among ourselves but God help the outsider that fights one of us. You fight one of us - you fight all of us.%u201D That was a strong bond among wrestlers. That was part of the innocence.

The biggest marks in the building are backstage. We believed that we knew - as much as we reasonably expect - those in there with us. We put our lives in each others hands and trusted them not to injure us. We believed. We knew.

George Carlin noted, %u201CPeople say %u2018sometimes you just don%u2019t know.%u2019 That%u2019s not true. Sometimes you do know. You just don%u2019t want to say it out loud.%u201D Now we know. The guy you%u2019re in the ring with; the man you%u2019re working out spots with; the guy next to you in the rental car - he could kill his family. What? That won%u2019t happen? You just know it couldn%u2019t happen. How do you know that?

Nancy and Daniel will be forever mourned as the victims of a mad man and a madman. Their memorial service will be tearful pageant celebrating their lives. As well it should be. The man who killed them was working out spots with Elijah Burke three nights previously.

We can no longer assume that just because we%u2019re in the same biz and have paid the same dues that we are all hard-wired the same way. We are not. Chris, the son of a bitch, killed that, too.
