The Strokes' Hammond Jr. Brings Bukowski to the Big Screen

Remember the Strokes? Yeah, the band had some hits. But then they read a review that called them the "saviors of rock," went on to do a shit-load of cocaine and now, collectively, they can be blamed for clever journos branding those in their mid to late twenties as the "is this it?" generation. Okay, great. So where are they now?

Following the lukewarm reviews of the band's third album First Impressions of Earth (December 2005), the Strokes' guitarist Albert Hammond Jr. decided to pursue a solo career and released Yours to Keep in October 2006. But now that the hype surrounding that disc has simmered down, Hammond Jr. has announced he is going to try his hand at writing a screenplay. And not just any screenplay -- Hammond Jr. has secured the rights to bring the late, great Charles Bukowski's book Pulp to the big screen.

ContactMusic reports:

The guitarist has received permission from Bukowski's widow Linda to adapt the 1994 book and admits he is already thinking about casting. He says, "I have people in mind. I have it in my head - I could do it now." But Hammond Jr. denies the suggestion he wants to direct the movie, although he'd like to be involved in the production. He adds, "I wouldn't want someone to ruin my script. I don't think they'd let me direct but I'd want to be somewhere in the picture like that."

And I thought the "Bukowsical" sounded bad...

I wonder if he realizes that a first time screenwriter is about a step lower than the key grip in the production hierarchy. He'd have better luck as a playwright in having any say in the final product.
