The Strokes' Hammond Jr. Brings Bukowski to the Big Screen

Remember the Strokes? Yeah, the band had some hits. But then they read a review that called them the "saviors of rock," went on to do a shit-load of cocaine and now, collectively, they can be blamed for clever journos branding those in their mid to late twenties as the "is this it?" generation. Okay, great. So where are they now?

Following the lukewarm reviews of the band's third album First Impressions of Earth (December 2005), the Strokes' guitarist Albert Hammond Jr. decided to pursue a solo career and released Yours to Keep in October 2006. But now that the hype surrounding that disc has simmered down, Hammond Jr. has announced he is going to try his hand at writing a screenplay. And not just any screenplay -- Hammond Jr. has secured the rights to bring the late, great Charles Bukowski's book Pulp to the big screen.

ContactMusic reports:

The guitarist has received permission from Bukowski's widow Linda to adapt the 1994 book and admits he is already thinking about casting. He says, "I have people in mind. I have it in my head - I could do it now." But Hammond Jr. denies the suggestion he wants to direct the movie, although he'd like to be involved in the production. He adds, "I wouldn't want someone to ruin my script. I don't think they'd let me direct but I'd want to be somewhere in the picture like that."

And I thought the "Bukowsical" sounded bad...

i can write semi-good pop songs and drink a lot. i think i'll buy the rights to cather in the rye and write a film to be filmed by 'they'. my intelligence suggests that 'they' will undoubtedly not let me direct but i'd like to produce so my golden prose isn't lost in the director's translation.

hey dip shit. guess what? if you are dealing with the 'they' i think you might be implying, 'they' want to make money so guess what? you'll do as they says. also might not the production of a movie, i don't know, invovle maybe ahhh colaboration?

so beyond this the only good film that could come out of this is if someone were to either shoot the documentary of you making this for some great laughs or someone writing a screenplay about a man so high on his ego and drugs that he buys the rights to make an adaptation because creatively he couldn't come up with his own clever idea for a screen play and how it ends up sucking so he hangs himself. i wonder how many of your songs might be adaptations...

Personally, I just wish these guys would get back in the studio and try to make another record like "Is This It? or "Room On Fire." But you know, whatever.

I enjoyed it, but it certainly wasn't his best. And, I remember Barfly sucking REALLY bad, and Bukowski wrote that screenplay himself so, yeah, I'm not really having high hopes for this one.

Apparently, Factotum is pretty good, but I haven't seen it yet.

It's established the Strokes have good raw ideas but terrible taste in producers. He'll get his buddies involved that have no business being anywhere near it; you'll wind up with the thinnest, glossiest, most meaningless and souless Pulp imaginable.

But I didn't even read it. It's more like making a Franny & Zoey movie than Catcher.

I was very disappointed with Pulp.

I actually enjoyed Barfly very much. I own a copy of it and watch it regularly.

I also own a copy of Factotum. It's pretty good...except for one glaring problem. Matt Dillon is too good-looking to be believable as Chinaski. His acting is good....but he's just not believable. At least Mickey Rourke looked scummy in Barfly.

The irony here is hilarious. You do know what a pulp novel is....do you not?

No high hopes for the movie. Yeah, the book was bad. Best thing about YtK was the cover of GBV's Postal Blowfish. Music Journalists suck asseggs anyway.
