Calls After Midnight: Kurt Cobain Reached Out to Iggy Pop

Before his death in 1994, Kurt Cobain once placed a late night call to Stooges frontman Iggy Pop and left the wiley singer a message asking if the pair could team up sometime soon for a studio collaboration. Pop claims he made repeated attempts to contact the Nirvana frontman but to no avail.

The 60-year-old says, "He called me up once at two in the morning. But this was when I was old enough to start going to bed at 9:30. When I’m not gigging I’m sensible so I didn’t take his call.

"It was cool because it was a great musician at his peak and he’s going, ‘Iggy, this is Kurt Cobain, let’s get in the studio man.’ "So he leaves me a number for the Four Seasons in Beverly Hills. And then every time I would call it was like, ‘Mr. Cobain is under the bed,’ or ‘We haven’t heard from Mr. Cobain in three days.’"

Talk about a missed opportunity...

Yep...just like the Sex Pistols and Ramones before him...or Elvis for that matter...damn those gullible adolescents.

EXACTLY.

Must not be a fan of rock music. Your loss. biggrin

I am a fan of rock music. GRUNGE is not rock. Nor was anything Kurt Cobain had to catterwaul into a microphone.

Well, you said that The Sex Pistols, The Ramones, and Elvis were not rock. I'm just curious what you do consider rock.

Cobain was a fucking talentless hack who caused music to SUCK OUT LOUD for ten years, first with Grunge, then that whole fucking "Alternative" fiasco. Thanks to that chest-thumping droolbaby, all one suddenly had to do to get a contract with a record label was to sing (badly) lyrics that made absolutely no sense whatsoever, and have a guitarist with TCS (Three-Chord-Syndrome) play off time to a drummer that knows only two beats. Fucker should have offed himself when Nirvana was still in the garage.

ARRR!!!

Oh, if only everyone with a band I disliked would just kill himself. surreal

It's the grieving family left behind that's the best part.

I love how a medieval reenactor is getting his pantaloons in a bunch about someone else's originality.

My my my, YOU'RE quite the talented hamster, aren't you? Not only can you type, but you know how to spell pantaloons!

Yeah, Maddox called. He wants his act back.

That world missed out on that one too.

Incredible shocked

Now THAT'S one I think would have been great music.

Guess what. Nobody fucking cares. That's the beautiful thing. Nobody cares what you THINK is good music. Nobody gives two shits about your raging hatred for Kurt Cobain, Nirvana, and grunge in general. You're not changing any minds. You're not winning any hearts. Nobody has taken off their flanel shirt and torn up jeans over anything you've said. However, you probably have turned a couple people off pirates. But you probably enjoy that since pirates are 'your' thing and not for the masses to enjoy.

You seem to forget where music was in the early 90s, and how Nevermind blew the cultural landscape away.

No, I didn't forget, I just failed to make my point. Trout said it better:

And Nirvana had the same sound as every other band coming out of the northwest at the time, they were just the first to get signed and pushed into the mainstream. If it wasnt Nirvana, it would have just been some other band that looked and sounded the same as them.

exactly the point I was trying (and failed) to make. There was plenty of joe-shmoe garage grunge waiting for the opportunity to make it big, but Nirvana actually did it. It's not that they were particularly special or talented, just lucky.

BEAVERTON MOUNTAIN, OR. Beaverton Mountain! And brother, if you want to talk about awful musicians thumping their chests and being full of themselves, I've got six words for you: MILES IN THE EIGHTIES. I would take "Bleach" over friggin' "Doo Bop" any day of the week.

Mind you I am not a real fan of Grunge myself, but Grunge is rock; as it was Pop music during its prime. Rock is a very general category for all sorts of sub-genres. Music and the messages portrayed change with the times. In addition rarely do you see many bands that become mainstream that have "high" musicianship skills; I'm not saying they do not exist, but the public back then, now, and the future just want something good to listen to. That might be three-chords that you can jump into a mosh pit and get the shit kicked out of you; or maybe sycopated-polyrhymes that come from an old blues house in the back waters of the deep south that you can can sit down, enjoy good friends, and drink beer as well.

There are my two cents for what they are worth.

And like others, I would like to know what you classify rock as.

I dunno, when two of more greats get together, it's usually crap.

And c'mon, all you people are rocking out to the new Stooges, right? Kurt would've started to suck to. I guess some people thought they always sucked, that's your opinion. But don't Nirvana for bands that ripped them off and the record companies going apeshit for anything remotely similar. the same record companies that pumped out all the bullshit I didn't happen to like in the 80s just turned to something else making more money.

Of course you could ignore the whole mainstream scene and listen to whatever the fuck you want. But then you couldn't bitch to everyone about it.

Has mainstream music ceased to suck lately? I missed that.
