Willie Nelson Narrowly Escapes Jail Time

Finally, the good ol' Department of Justice is letting country legend Willie Nelson off the hook for possession of marijuana. Well, not completely off the hook.
Road warriors Willie Nelson and tour manager David Anderson narrowly escaped jail time yesterday when the duo plead guilty to a misdemeanor count of marijuana possession in St. Martinville, Louisiana, after a raid that took place last year on Nelson's tour bus by state troopers who claimed to have found a sizeable amount of kush and shrooms on board.
Nelson and Anderson were arrested along with Nelson's sister and band member Bobbie Nelson and two bus drivers when their tour bus was stopped by a state trooper on Interstate 10 near Breaux Bridge, La., on Sept. 18, 2006. The arrests took place while they were returning to Texas after performing a show with Ray Price in Montgomery, Ala. Police confiscated 1.5 pounds of marijuana and 0.2 pound of hallucinogenic mushrooms, but prosecutor Chester Cedars said Tuesday that all evidence indicated the marijuana was for personal use.
Cedars went easy on the guys after he determined that neither perpetrator intended to "distribute" any of the drugs found in their possession. As punishment, both Nelson and Anderson were each fined $1,024 and placed on probation for six months. Thank god, because it really irks me to think that a harmless old crooner like Willie might be seducing law abiding, young listeners into his musical world of drugs and debauchery while on the pot.
