Christian Slater Goes Cuckoo

Christian Slater is getting locked up again. But this time it's not for assaulting a cop with his cowboy boots or getting caught with a trash bag full of cocaine. Those fun-filled days of glorious debauchery are long gone. This time around Slater is getting himself locked up in a mental institution, willingly and for the sake of art no less.

The bad boy actor is said to have signed on for the lead in an Edinburgh Festival stage revival of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, based on Ken Kesey's 1962 fictional novel of the same name about an Oregon mental institution. The book also inspired the 1975 film which starred Jack Nicholson and won a shit load of Oscars.

The 'True Romance' star beat off competition from Woody Harrelson and Robert Downey Jr for the role made famous by Jack Nicholson.

A source said, "It will definitely be Christian, although they're keeping it hush-hush. It's hoped the play will then move to the West End."

'Heathers' star Christian bears a striking resemblance to Nicholson, who won an Oscar for his portrayal of mental patient Randle P McMurphy in the classic 1975 film.
This marks Slater's second go at the McMurphy character, following his 2004 London debut in the role where he recieved a standing ovation on opening night.

The Edinburgh Festival runs August 10 through September 2, 2007 in, of all places, Edinburgh, Scotland.
