Richard Gere is Flaming: Effigies Burned by Indian Protesters

Nationalists in Mumbai, India proved it's not just their curry that's hot after an irate mob of protesters burned effigies of 58-year-old actor Richard Gere on Monday. The uppity crowd flamed Gere's likeness in response to a Sunday incident where Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty, 31, ended up on the receiving end of Gere's affections at an AIDS-awareness benefit.

In Mumbai, members of the right-wing Hindu nationalist group Shiv Sena beat burning effigies of Gere with sticks and set fire to glamourous shots of Shetty.

Similar protests have broken out in other cities.

The two appeared at a news conference in New Delhi on Sunday to highlight the HIV/AIDS epidemic among India's truck drivers. In front of a cheering crowd, Gere kissed the giggling Shetty on the hand, then kissed her on both cheeks before bending her in a full embrace to kiss her cheek again.

According to the Press Trust of India, Prakash Javadekar spoke on behalf of the Hindu nationalist party Bharatiya Janata Party and said, "Such a public display is not part of Indian tradition."

Yeah, well shoving a gerbil up one's ass isn't part of American tradition either but you don't see us setting things on fire.

single most funniest thing I have ever read.

maybe they should lighten up? it's not like he open mouth kissed her and grabber ass. I know that culturally any kind of PDA (public display of affection) is a huge no-no in india, but c'mon.

I'm getting sick of all the cultural groups that react in such a way. I mean honestly, let's say rick felt bad about offending the country, would he really be inclined to apologise after they set fire to his likeness?

Everyone I've known from India says "India is a good place to be from, not a good place to be."

That these protests are coming from Shiv Sena and the BJP - both right-wing parties with a history of energizing their political base by whipping up mob violence and sectarian strife - should tell us everything we need to know.

At least we're civilized enough in this country to not be so influenced by some agenda-laden, partisan shills, isn't that right Imus?

It's unfortunate (and ironic) that the anti-HIV message of the event got lost over Gere's innapropriate sexual behaviour/Shiv Sena's massive overreaction.

That said, I would be pretty annoyed if Richard Gere ever tried to grope me.

I honestly do not know of a country that riots and sets a light effigies quicker then India, it's like they keep spare effigies on stock just incase a riot starts . Just look at the reactions whenever their cricket team loses. They protest at the front of players houses and the like. I guess they would have a few effigies spare since they knocked out of the world cup early.

It is odd that kissing on the cheek is bad, but burning in effigy is fine.

I wonder if they would have made such a fuss if it had been an Indian actor. Oh well, it's all probably raised awareness of AIDS, regardless.

But conical-section wrath is so much deadlier.
