Irvine Welsh to Help Kick Off Edinburgh's Hogmanay

Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh has signed on to help kick off Edinburgh's fast-approaching Hogmanay celebration, beginning with a torchlight procession on December 29.

29th December, Parliament Square by St Giles Cathedral, 6.30pm

Grab a torchlight and your blonde wig, and join a bunch of noisy, hairy vikings and Scotsmen as they drag a viking warship up Edinburgh's Calton Hill. A 15,000 strong crowd is expected to wend its way from the Edinburgh Old Town down to Princes Street, to Waterloo Place and up to the ancient Edinburgh meeting ground, Calton hill.

On arriving at the hill firework displays and the blazing flames from the ship will light up the night sky when the ship itself is put to the torch.

Welsh will help hand out torches to revellers arriving for the parade of fire. He'll then lead the parade alongside Lord Provost Lesley Hinds. Hogmanay is an ancient New Year's Eve celebration, with roots in Pagan rituals surrounding the winter solstice. Edinburgh's Hogmanay is among the biggest New Year's Eve celebration in the world.
