'Edward Scissorhands: The Musical' Makes U.S. Stage Debut

Tim Burton fans and theater goers now have a chance to see the musical version of Edward Scissorhands onstage. The show succeeded on the London stage, and now it’s headed for American audiences, thanks to director and choreographer Matthew Bourne.

The show debuted this weekend at San Francisco’s Orpheum Theater, where it will run until December 10th. Producer hope the show’s success will allow a move to Broadway.

“Matthew Bourne (Swan Lake) is back with a magical new musical adaptation of the classic Tim Burton motion picture Edward Scissorhands,” states press notes, “Already a hit in London, Edward Scissorhands has toured Asia and the United Kingdom prior to making its North American premiere in San Francisco. A treat for the whole family, this touching and witty gothic fairytale tells the story of a boy created by an eccentric inventor. With only scissors for hands, Edward must find his place in a strange new suburban world where the well-meaning community struggles to see past his appearance to the innocence and gentleness within.”

I’m not sure if the screenplay will translate well to the stage, but judging from the photos of the production, it will at least be fun to watch, provided OSHA doesn’t stop the production.

Whoah, this is the gayest thing I've ever seen almost.

And I don't mean 'gay' in an offensive way, like Clay Aiken,
but in a "broadway is so damn gay" kinda way.

I can't decide if this is a worse idea than Interview with the Vampire on stage.

I think this would actually translate nicely ... i'll assume it's "ok" until i can see it and judge for myself ...

Just to be clear, because the article is not. It is not a musical, it is a dance piece. There is no singing, and matthew Bourne is known for brilliant re-imagining of classics such as Carmen, Swan Lake, and The Nutcraker. His all-male Swan Lake was the most seen piece of choreography of the 20th century. By the way I was at the first public perfomance of this show in London, and there were some really great things about it.

What in the fuck?!?

EDIT: ok, after reading the post 2 posts above me I feel slightly better about it. I thought it was a full blown musical. and I love those, but not for Edward Scissorhands.

well... at least it's not "On Ice!"

I've got a couple of friends on the tour, and they say it's amazing. Besides, Tim Burton needs a little Karmic payback for remaking Willy Wonka
