Janice Joplin Biopic Lead Role Finally Cast

After years of debate, director Penelope SpheerisÂ’ chose a lead to play Janice Joplin in the biopic Gospel of Janice. In an unexpected move, Zooey Deschanel beat the competition for the coveted role.

Months after Spheeris announced Pink as the lead, the singer dropped out. Although she was SpheerisÂ’ first choice for the role, Pink claimed the hoopla over casting had turned the project into "some circus pop contest - who's the 'it' girl who wants to play Janis." Casting agents suggested Lindsay Lohan, Scarlett Johansson, and Britney Spears for the role, but ultimately decided Deschanel best fit the role.

Gospel of Janice starts filming in November for a 2008 release.

She's British, and not an actress. I don't think you can teach her talk like Texas-born Janis.

I don't know....have you heard Traci Ullman? She's absolutely British and three-quarters and yet she can pull off any accent, American, foreign, man, and woman. It's possible.

I wouldn't know that Zooey chick if she came up and bit me on the ass, but based on looks, I'd prefer Pink. She has the same exuberant expressions as Janis did.





I've always thought it kinda sad the way Janis is often referred to as 'ugly.'
