Project Runway's Resident Cheater Tells His Side of the Story

With nothing better on television this summer, I hope you tuned in to Bravo’s reality show, Project Runway. If you’ve been watching, you already know this season’s villain, Keith Michael, got the boot. Sadly, he was booted without an Auf Wiedersehen.

Brooklyn, N.Y., native Keith Michael, 34, was asked to leave because he had pattern-making books in his room - a violation of the contest's rules - and at one point had gone AWOL from the production. The freelance designer tells Bravo senior vice president of production and programming Andy Cohen, who writes a blog on bravotv.com, "I am not the kind of person who can't admit when he's wrong. I feel like there was a lack of integrity on behalf of the production. I thought it was one-sided." He doesn't deny he had the books - only that he used them to cheat. "These pattern books were not the kind that you would be able to use for practical purposes on the show," he says. "One of the books was the most detailed pattern book you would ever see about menswear that had nothing to do with anything on the show. I brought it because I was working on my menswear line at the time. And the other was a dictionary of production terms."

Michael also had an explanation for a four-hour departure from the production, another Project Runway no-no.

"All I did was I went to my boyfriend's apartment, found his spare key, found an e-mail from the executive producer and asked him to contact me. I don't know what to say – that's the deal."

I think the guy abandoned production to score a dime-bag on the Lower East Side, and by voicing paranoia that the show’s producers set him up, he proved my “Keith Michael is a Crackhead” theory.

"I think this whole thing is farfetched and crazy," he continues. "I have gotten so much fan e-mail from this whole thing. People want me to be the bad boy, but I am not that guy. I thought I would win because of talent, but now I don't know who's to blame but I am not owning up to this."

If you haven’t seen Michael get kicked the fuck off the show, here it is.

"I had a lot of tricks up my sleeve still" was a bad choice of words.

That said, he did some great word, and I am marginally sad, if i got sad over reality television stars, to see him go.

Word. I was happy when he got kicked off. He seemed really egotistical.

Editing can do a lot to your perception, though. So who knows.

I was totally prepared for a dirty sex scandal. And I was afraid it was going to involve Kane or Michael and I would be really sad. I was totally "eh" about Keith, so I am glad he was the one to go. He was an arrogant bastard, which makes for excellent television...so it speaks to the producers' integrity that they kicked him off like they were supposed to and didn't keep him around for the attitude he would have continued to bring, as well as some rather incredible clothes.
