Joy Division Film Gets the Go-Ahead

The long-in-development biopic about the bandÂ’s late frontman Ian Curtis has found a U.K. distributor.. The movie, called "Control," started filming yesterday in England with newcomer Sam Riley in the title role. Indie veteran Samantha Morton plays CurtisÂ’ wife, Deborah.

Expanding on Deborah Curtis' memoirs, "Touching From a Distance," Matt Greenhalgh's script examines the musician's struggle between his love for his wife and for his girlfriend, his bouts with epilepsy and his performances with the band.


Photographer/video guru Anton Corbijn, who has worked with U2, D-Mode, and Nirvana, is making his feature directorial debut on the movie. And other bands are getting into the act, with soundtrack contributions reportedly coming from David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Roxy Music, The Buzzcocks and, yes, New Order.

I can't wait for this film. I think Corbijn will do a great job. The video he did for 'Atmosphere' is astounding. And the soundtrack line-up looks great.

Yeah, I don't think any film can quite top the dramatic peak reached by the swinging feet and the yodeling chicken dance.

Since I didn't see 24HPP I luckily don't know what you're talking about. But I am very looking forward to this film. Joy Division is still, after so many years, my favorite band.

See 24 Hour Party People... while not an autobiography of Curtis, it's a fuckin' hilarious pic. If you like any of the Manchester bands of the eighties, it's a rare treat. I love Corbijn's work. The new flick should be good too.
