Can Oscar Winners Sing? Do We Want Them To?

Yet another actor is taking aim at the radio charts. The latest offender is Gwyneth Paltrow, who’s clearly bored with her reputation as a classy actress.

Paltrow has been writing and recording songs with William Orbit, who produced her buddy Madonna’s “Ray of Light” album, according to Brit paper The Sun.

This is excellent news for the half-dozen people who bought the soundtrack to her karaoke flick Duet. Meanwhile, comedians around the country are sending her a thank-you note.

To be fair, a lot of actors get their starts doing musical theatre in regional and summer stock. That's one of the reasons Catherine Zeta-Jones-Douglass gotthe part in Chicago.

She was pretty damn good in that, I thought. The girl's got talent.

It would make sense for a lot of successful actors to also be reasonable singers.

The more skills you have as an actor, whether it's acrobatics, dialects, playing instruments, juggling, mime, etc. etc. the more roles are going to be available to you (beyond movie roles, including stage, commercials, training videos, etc.) and the more roles you get, the better representation you'll be able to get and the more you're going to be seen by heavier hitters and so on. With the box office draw of musicals in the theatre world, it's only natural that any actor who wants to make it is going to have as good a singing voice as they can. So I wouldn't doubt that a lot of famous actors also have better than average singing voices.

Yeah, Catherine Zeta Jones was terrific in Chicago. And it's definitely true that many artists are artistic in a variety of ways. Like Zeta Jones, who trained as a dancer. Or Neve Campbell, who also was a hard-core ballerina before moving to acting. Or Broadway all-stars like Taye Diggs, Kevin Kline, et al who were pretty much clobbered with the talent stick. Or even (forgive me) Patrick Swayze, who also studied dancing before taking Baby out of the corner. The thing about Gwynnie, though, is that she’s never made a peep – pardon the pun – about being a singer. The jury’s out – she may be a fantastic belter. She’s obviously loaded with acting talent. But in the meantime, this is smacking perilously close to Don Johnson and Eddie Murphy land.

In the end, though, we may never know. Her rep is denying reports of an impending album.

I keep mixing this thread up with the Portman/Izzard Cabaret thread.
