Stop Looking at Evangeline's Ass

“Lost” actress Evangeline Lilly claims that she was so uncomfortable being wicked-ass hot as a teenager, she prayed to God to make her ugly…or something.

"I spent many nights crying myself to sleep wishing I was ugly because of the way men leered and disrespected me, because they assumed things about my mental capacity or my physical willingness based on the way I looked."

She also says she quit her job as a waitress because of the evil ogling by male patrons.

"I felt like a whore. You feel like they're paying to stare at your ass when you're walking away from the table."

She's not very articulate, but I get what she's saying. The fact that she was a "tomboy" before hitting puberty particularly says something . . . She was a person back then, who could run around and do everything else that other people her age did, and then suddenly one day she woke up with tits and an ass and all that and the whole world changed. It's a shitty, shitty feeling, to realize that in the eyes of at least some of the world, you have lost your personhood and have become an ass and a set of tits instead.

Either she just isn't very articulate, or what she said was quoted too selectively by the interviewer to sound anything other than super shallow (perhaps with the goal of provoking exactly the reaction that you all are having right here).

And the fact that there are a lot worse things than being attractive and being objectified because of it likely doesn't make it feel any less shitty. The whole "Shut the hell up, you could be armless and legless and dying of AIDS in Africa, so what do you have to complain about?" argument is a lame one.

Agree so much.

Yeah, whereas the 'oh, the interviewer probably made her say those things' argument is water-tight and brilliant.

She only presented that as one of two possibilities, and it always is a possibility when a quote is out of context like that.

And is airtight or watertight better? Anyone? Anyone?

Explain to me how those quotes could have been 'taken out of context'. Was she just reading out some lines from her new original screenplay, hmm? Maybe reading out some dialogue from an upcoming Lost episode?

When she said she cried herself to sleep because she was just SO beautiful, I assume she was just cracking a funny and the interviewer interpreted it as a serious comment? Yeah, lets all blame it on him. That idiot. Putting words into her mouth and all. I bet he was the one that made her pose with her ass out too. And made her walk around in just her panties all the time. I vote we call up his employer and make an official complaint because of his blatantly successful attempts at 'psychicly telling the interviewee what to say using only the power of his mind'.

We don't know anything about what kind of men she had to serve, what she had to wear for work, and exactly how offensive and degrading the assumptions made about her and treatment she was given may have been.

We're left to assume that, aside from being better looking than most waitresses, there was nothing unusual about her situation. That might not be the case, though. Maybe there is a particularly high degree of sexism in the area where she worked or maybe the regulars were particularly huge asses? I can certainly imagine a situation where a restuarant regularly served a few offensive pigs and that would have a negative effect on the place's employees.

Nobody's accusing the reporter of intentionally misrepresenting Evangeline, but surely it would help us understand things better if the actress had a chance to further develop her story or, at the very least, defend herself against the idea that she is just bitching about something that isn't that big of a deal?

And I can understand somebody who was previously uncomfortable with her body because of poor treatment in the past deciding to stick her ass out later in life. I mean, as a celebrity, she's treated better than most people and almost definitely treated better than the average waitress. Without the poor treatment, there's nothing to fear and no reason to hide.

If she did like showing off her body did she consider wearing baggy clothes? Maybe it wasnt an option where she waited tables (dress codes?) but if you dont want someone to notice the shape of your body then cover it up! I have been a chubby guy most of my life and it was akward as a teenager. So what did I do till I got over the embarrasement of having a spare tire? where baggy cloths. Maybe she cashed in on her body b/c she lacks emotional/social/intellectual maturity to do something more with her life (not thats acting is a pointless pursuit).

One would imagine there would be a dress code as I've never seen a waitress in baggy clothes.

I don't see how covering up really solves anything. I've got a band-aid over a pimple, but it's still there and I hardly feel better about having it now that it's covered. Even if hiding something cuts down on harrassment, you're hiding because you're afraid of harassment and, if you continue to hide, then you're in a persistent state of subconscious fear. Furthermore, you're letting the jackassery of others control your behavior. They're exerting control over you, even if they don't know it, and being controlled is one of the worst feelings in the world.

Honestly, doesn't anyone think it's wrong that we're saying a person should have to dress differently and hide themselves instead of, you know, saying people shouldn't be sexist pigs? It's just victim blaming.

And that last comment of yours really rubs me the wrong way.

Here's some context.

Evangeline Lily's view on morality is rather conservative. She's probably a bit easier offended by "base" behavior than most of us here.

Nicole Evangeline Lilly was raised Baptist and Mennonite in Fort Saskatchewan, a tiny prairie town in Alberta that dips well below zero degrees in winter...

...Naturally, Lilly took to the notion of a career in show business much like a chicken would take to a hot bath in a fry-o-lator. "I avoided the industry for so long because I resent it for so many reasons," she says. "There was no way that my ideas about life and morality were going to coincide with that industry, so there was no point in even playing with fire."

Of course, being pretty was only half the problem, being naive the other half.

Puberty arrived late—at 16—and Lilly, who'd been a tomboy her whole life, became beautiful overnight. When I ask what her high school classmates would say about her, her face darkens. "If you polled them the year I graduated, they would have said that I was a slut," she says. "And the most I had ever done is French kiss. It was because of the way I looked. I was always the girl who hung out with the boys. What I didn't realize was that after I hit puberty I was something different to the guys. They all wanted to get in my pants. They couldn't, so they just said they did."

The original snippet might give the impression that she's just out for sympathy, or trying to add depth to her image. But after reading the
entire article, I don't really believe that.

That clip is taken from a magazine quoted in a BBC news article. There is no source to research, so I don't know if the statement is true.

I don't because I like my body. In fact, I would have thought that people who worry about their looks every 15 minutes must have body dysmorphia! shocked

Also, Evangeline Lilly seems a bit daft. That is not an assumption I'm making from her oh-so hot looks either; it's based on the conceited, self-pity spewing from her mouth. whatever
