Hipsters Take One Step Closer to Yuppie-dom: Introducing 'Indie Rock Yoga'

Have you ever wanted to rock some Cold War Kids or Ted Leo while practicing your Camel or Cobra poses? Or just particpate in something totally antithetical to rock n' roll in general? Well, Bill Peregoy has just the thing for you.
The Boston Globe reports that Peregoy, former owner of Pop Narcotic Records (Helium, Versus), is now teaching a yoga class called "The Bends - Yoga That Rocks" at Mindful Dog Yoga studio in the increasingly gentrified Boston, MA neighborhood of Jamaica Plain.
"You can really get lost in rock shows . . . in the moment," Peregoy says, walking around the room as students double over into the "downward-facing-dog" position and breathe loudly in time with the rock group, Ted Leo and the Pharmacists...
Peregoy had dreamed of opening his own yoga studio since he started practicing yoga seven years ago. On April 7, he transformed a skylighted office that had housed a nonprofit, social-justice organization into a space for yoga...
"I love music, and I think music and yoga can go together really well," Peregoy said. "And every yoga studio I go into, almost, you're getting the same 10 yoga CDs that are either kind of new age, bland stuff, or kind of cool Indian chanting. But it's the same stuff everywhere you go. Why do you have to have that kind of music with your yoga? There's no reason."
Mid way through class, Peregoy yelled: "It's starting to smell like indie rock!" Everyone laughed as they lowered themselves to their mats and concentrated on the beat...
Peregoy concluded the class with the traditional saying, "Namaste," which refers to "the light or divine in you."
But on this day, the saying embodies another meaning: "Let the rock in you enlighten you," he said, bowing his head.
Mindful Dog's website lists Sonic Youth, Belle & Sebastian and Stereolab as part of Peregoy's playlist and there's a five dollar discount for those wearing "rock club wristbands." For an extra five bucks you can "stick around for socializing, more music and post-class vegan snacks," including a selection of vegan sushi.
A class of aging hipsters with bellies full of last night's beer & this afternoon's veggies working on their manipura chakras? Somehow, I don't think that was indie rock Peregoy was smelling.
