It’s always nice to know who your ancestors are, or who used to own your ancestors. Al Sharpton has learned that Strom Thurmond’s great-great grand pappy used to own his great-grandfather. Just warms your heart, doesn’t it?

The discovery began with Ancestry.com, who asked a reporter from the Daily News if he would like his family tree done. The reporter then asked Sharpton if he wanted to give it a try. Sharpton agreed. The genealogists discovered that Sharpton's great-grand pappy, Coleman Sharpton, was a slave owned by the Thurmond family. Coleman eventually freed.

Al Sharpton called the revelation “shocking.”

"It was probably the most shocking thing in my life," Sharpton said at a news conference Sunday.

Strom Thurmond finally died in 2003 at the age of 100. He was a really great Senator, if you like racists. He made South Carolina proud when, in 1957, he filibustered for more than 24 hours against a civil rights bill. Who would of thought he came from a family of slave owners?

Sharpton only met Thurmond once. In 1991, Sharpton was introduced to Thurmond by James Brown. I’m going to repeat that. In 1991, Sharpton was introduced to Thurmond by James Brown. Sharpton called the meeting “awkward.”

Just think how awkward it would be now.
