Savin’ Sea Turtles

In response to all the doubters out there (you know who you are) who didn’t think Internet petitions and e-mail drives were worth the Internet they were printed on, I posted an Internet advocacy success story describing how Oceana put the smack down on Amazon.com and got them to stop selling Shark Fin Soup.

We didn’t get a chance to participate in that one since it was over and done with in 16 days. But the same group, Oceana, is now running an e-mail campaign to help save endangered and threatened sea turtles.

All sea turtles that swim in U.S. water are listed as threatened or endangered under the Endangered Species Act. Despite their depleted status, the government authorizes these majestic sea turtles to be injured and killed in U. S. commercial fishing operations, to have their nesting beaches destroyed by development, be squished in dredging and poisoned by pollutants…

and

For example, in the United States, the government authorizes commercial fishing to kill nearly 10,000 sea turtles and harm or injure an additional 334,000 each year…

Our Oceans are way the hell over fished anyway, so implementing procedures to ensure the survival of the sea turtles might even help relieve the strain on other fish species. You can score some good Karma and sign the petition here.
