Psyclon Nine Will Shatter You
Ever wondered what armageddon might sound like? It would most likely echo violence and despair, with bouts of screaming terror and the resonance of demons ripping organs out of bodies. The latest release from San Francisco’s Psyclon Nine puts you in that uncomfortable place. Not only will you be swallowed up by an apocalyptic universe but your heart will pound fast to the point of nausea.

Crwn Thy Frnicatr (out now on Metropolis Records), plays like your worst nightmare. Intense and aggressive, this album fuses angry whips of grinding, speed metal beats with distincive, deceitfully calm space that only the dark at heart will love for its romanticized, manic depression. Often haunting and sometimes shrill, each track skillfully pulls you in a different direction. Songs like “Parasitic” set the scene—beginning with the sounds of a wailing child, smoky operatic voices and the industrial pounding of soldiers marching to war. The contrast of “Scar of the Deceiver,” rich with double bass drums, slithering heavy guitar, and the million satanic voices of Nero screaming with bloody anger, will shatter your guilty bones to ash. Each song melds together to create one arrestingly cinematic album.
Psyclone Nine is biting aggression and pleasurable pain. Though, at times, I found some of the album's content slightly predictable and almost overdone (like sounds of a music box in the song “The Room”), and couldn’t help but compare them to Cradle of Filth; their bitter taste of electro-industrial-black-metal put a knife right through my flesh and murdered me with glee.
