Accused Killer Sues Universal Over Movie
California prosecutors charged Jesse James Hollywood with in the 2000 kidnap and murder of a fifteen-year-old boy. Hollywood allegedly killed Nicholas Markowitz in August of 2000 over a drug-debt owed by the victim’s brother. The case grabbed headlines all over the world after Hollywood fled the country, only to be captured in Brazil in 2005.
Hollywood’s defense argued a fair trial is not possible because of Universal Studio's upcoming film about the murder; consequently, they announced his intention to sue Universal.
Hollywood alleges Alpha Dog, which was shown at the Sundance Film Festival, closely parallels the theory of Markowitz's murder alleged by the former prosecutor in the case, Santa Barbara County Deputy District Attorney Ron Zonen, who was a consultant for the film.
Hollywood is seeking to stop the planned January release of the movie, which was directed by Nick Cassavetes and stars Sharon Stone, Bruce Willis and Justin Timberlake. He claims it will "irreperably harm" his ability to receive a fair trial.
While the prosecution pointed out Hollywood faces the death penalty if he is convicted, Universal’s reps declined to comment on the matter. I imagine the additional publicity attracted by the suit overjoyed those fine folks at Universal Studios.
