Janice Joplin Biopic Lead Role Finally Cast

After years of debate, director Penelope Spheeris’ chose a lead to play Janice Joplin in the biopic Gospel of Janice. In an unexpected move, Zooey Deschanel beat the competition for the coveted role.

Months after Spheeris announced Pink as the lead, the singer dropped out. Although she was Spheeris’ first choice for the role, Pink claimed the hoopla over casting had turned the project into "some circus pop contest - who's the 'it' girl who wants to play Janis." Casting agents suggested Lindsay Lohan, Scarlett Johansson, and Britney Spears for the role, but ultimately decided Deschanel best fit the role.

Gospel of Janice starts filming in November for a 2008 release.
