The Secret Life of Ernie & Bert

It's based on Lillian Hellman's "The Children's Hour" (1934) in which two female friends, Martha and Karen are teachers at a girl's school, and then one day, one of their students, Mary begins a rumour that they're lesbians, and suddenly the whole town is in outrage and there's no supporting evidence except that they are two single women who live together and are very close friends. Then at the end of the play, Martha confesses that she may have been in love with Karen, (like Ernie admits) and Karen denies it, and maintains they are 'just friends' and then eventually Martha kills herself.
It was also a film in 1961 with Shirley McLaine and Audrey Hepburn.
