Brion does Dido
I'm gonna get shit for this, but Dido is kinda like Coldplay--she's just one of life's guilty pleasures that you feel yourself resisting, until one day you're trapped in your car in a traffic jam spontaneously crying to the song "Thank You." I don't know why.
So I'm not gonna go running through the streets yelling it or anything, but it's kinda cool to hear that she's currently in LA working with the Wizard of Oz that is Jon Brion. If you don't know Jon Brion's work, you just don't know you know Jon Brion's work. He produced the last Kanye record, the first two Fiona Apple's, and Rufus Wainwright, to name a few. He's also one of a handful of interesting film score composers left in Hollywood. Think Punch Drunk Love, think Magnolia, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, to name again just a few. Oh, and he used to blow people's minds on a weekly basis at Largo in LA, before be sidelined by bouts of tendonitis.
Jon spoke to Billboard about Dido seeking him out:
"She wants something less glossy and further left," Brion reveals. "I think people have disregarded the emotional aspects of her writing, because the way the records have been presented make the music seem a little flat. But in terms of her singing, she's just an absolutely unbelievable, naturally great singer, in truth one of the greatest I've ever worked with. There's a certain kind of restraint in record making that she doesn't want anymore. That's good. That's a recipe for finding new things."
The album, Dido's third, has no release date, but seems scheduled by Arista for some time before the year's end.
