Weapons. What Am I Missing?

SUNDAY JULY 31 2005 9:52 AM

Submitted by creamzen. Edited By Synnove.

I own small arms, assault rifles, and handguns just to name a few. I am not a country boy, as most usually think of us as weapon freaks. Nothing wrong with the country folk, honest! Anyway, I can't seem to get any of my girlfriends to do any of the activities involved with the art and pleasure of the modern weapon.

Ladies, am I missing something? I understand that the field of weaponry is vastly a male ego playground, and most educated people stay away from the whole topic in general. I also acknowledge the equal rights movement for woman that this country has fought over for a few years. Granted, this is not the only thing that’s been hustled over.

Well, as you can tell, all of my girlfriends are “ex” at this point. I did everything I could think of, from being subtle, to being an over bearing, chauvinistic asshole about the aspects of modern weapons. The wonderful ladies that have graced my life, all dumped me for my zeal about the whole thing.

Should I just keep my weapons in the closet and lead the ladies to believe that I'm a good guy and don't have this odd fetish (for an inner city guy)? Point is, I'm at a loss and I think I’ve given up. Tell me what it is that I've looked over or missed! I’m almost borderline desperate. Please help, Gods of modern day pin up!

so, just to sum up:

you have an odd fetish for inner city guys and you want to know if you should keep your "weapon" in the closet?

My partner is also extremely well armed. While he's enthusiastic about collecting firearms, he's not overzealous and it's evolved into something we can do together. (Ie.: we go shooting at the range every Monday morning).

Your weapons SHOULD BE in a closet, well, a gun safe anyway. Firearm collecting is a hobby like any other and she may or may not share your interest, but I don't think it really needs to be an issue, you know? Obviously you wouldn't be a well suited match for a rabid gun-hater, but as long as you're not waiving them around your living room I think it should be fine.

Just accept that unless you meet a girl who's specifically into your scene (i.e., met at a gun show or another venue where enthusiasts get together), she may not share your hobby. Don't try to make converts. If she's interested, she'll ask you to share your knowledge and enthusiasm. If she doesn't ask, she's not interested. Trying to force the issue is just going to put stress on the relationship, make her think that this is really all that matters to you, and probably cause things to fall apart.

You don't have to hide your interest in guns either. It's not a shameful hobby and there's no reason to be secretive about it. Go ahead and lay it on the table. If the girl happens to be strongly anti-gun, you probably want to be able to figure that out before things get too serious.

My dad's heavily into guns as well. Every time I come home on break it's "let's go shoot the belt-fed machine gun!" or "let's go to the rock quarry and shoot old propane tanks!" Unfortunately, while I love my dad and think he's a great guy, I am not that into spending my free weekends at machine gun shoots.

Accept that the girls you date may have similar perspectives, don't try to force your hobby on anyone, and just enjoy it on your own. If it's that important to you, try to find a girl specific to your scene (although that may be hard, since I think guns are a little like tabletop RPGs in that women are under-represented in the hobby). If it's not, just consider this a "guy activity" and go have a great time at the rock quarry by yourself.

You're missing the right girl. I love firing weapons and I live all the way up in Yankee New England! Keep searching.
