I started skateboarding late as well (I think I was 20). I Googled skating communities and informational sites, researched as much as I could on what sort of skateboard would best suit me, and went to a skate shop to get what I needed. I also managed to find local skating groups so I could practice and get tips from the big kids.
Then I practiced. All the time. I had a ball. Until I fell and shattered my wrist into a bunch of tiny pieces. So you'll wanna wear wrist guards as well as the other types of protective equipment, so you don't do that.

Some people think they look like rods if they wear protective equipment, but I think it's hot when people care about their personal well-being. Hurting yourself is only cool if it happens when you're defending someone's honor.
I suggest getting comfortable on your board first. Break it in by just using it to go anywhere within walking distance. The store, friend's house etc. Once you are comfortable and able to keep your balance on it, then you can start working on other things like vert or street tricks. (If that's what you want)
It is also worth it to put your money into a good board/trucks/wheels etc even as a beginner. Don't get one of those shitty $20 boards or it will just be harder to learn.
Above all else, remember, it will take time to get comfortable with it, be patient. Baby steps.
i got my first skateboard when i turned 20. I spill almost every time i climb on. I have a dirt dessert with every ride. but that comes with learning. don't get discouraged. all those injuries only make me more determined to push myself. boys will talk their shit, but use it as fuel to prove it to yourself that you can do it. good luck!
I don't have any advice but I'd like to say I really admire your decision to learn to skate. I've been wanting to learn for years but I've been too big a wuss.
I have never learned any type of skating due to my horredous balance, so I can offer you no advice except buy safety gear and be prepared to fall arse over tit a lot.
Back in the day when I skated and all that, I taught a friend who was afraid of falling on pavement a bunch of tricks on grass first (like the basic logistics of the tricks) so she'd learn how to kick the board correctly to land each trick before she got it rolling and on pavement. It helped her a lot. I actually thought doing the tricks on grass was harder, but the fall is a lot softer.
And yea, I was one of the "dorks" that wore a helmet and pads everytime I went out. Just go out there and have fun. Learn to move on the board before you do tricks though.
