Taking a look at the New responsive and Android friendly version of the SG website -
I have to say it's a great start; and that I'm going to miss the old site..

First impressions, from a girl web geek and rant.. ~
Please don't take this to heart web guys girls working on the site - I know your still developing and improving its just my thoughts -
HomeScreen - Wow everything is huuggee spacious and clean - maybe a bit too big for my liking.. That banner is maahhaaassiive on the home screen - I understand big banners but that one is ri.donculous!! I am the type of girl that likes crisp clean resolution not overcompressed blurryness to compensate - we live in a time of HD so please use some sort of tool to detect bandwidth and only load in a super compressed large image if needed it really spoils my experience :'( yes I'm super picky.. Although saying this I'm sure it will improve; yesterday the images weren't working and today they are so much better
I think the whole site layout needs to be reduced by 50%.. Zoomed out in chrome to 50% much better I have a none retina display maybe that has something to do with it.. Maybe I should buy a new mac.
Now; I'm the type to have caching disabled when I took a look at the file size ouch 14.1mb transfered.. ok true 9.6 was from videos - this is going to eat a lot of bandwidth on both sides.. so could you put an img place holder on those videos until I choose to download them please.. Maybe swap to JWplayer instead of Videojs?..
This made me chuckle; whilst looking through the source.. your such a geek, whoever you are that put this in...
<!-- we built div city! -->
Someone suffering from divitus I think was the term in one of the books I read
But to be honest code looks clean and good at least they didn't build table metropolis like I have seen from a lot of designers..
Wooweee that is an oldschool nightmare to work with.
Also I learnt something new never seen or used this html5 tag - <figure> or <figcaption> must use in my next project...
Was surprised no og:facebook meta open graph tags in the head but not so important to use visitors.
Woweee how many scripts do you guys use.. Please consider using requirejs to pull them all into one big file and compress with uglifyjs or google closure please for me..
Seriously 27 http request for scripts - chuck it into 1 big compressed file or multiple but not 27 also I think require does CSS compression and merge.. I think requirejs.com take a look.
BTW nice selection and choice of libs to use and glad your no longer using prototype.. I started with prototype many many moons ago but jquery was the way to go. My prototype books are gathering dust.
Also need to enable that gzip compression on heroku somehow
No expire headers set so if anyone is caching the site and you update the css file it may break for them maybe add the infamous ?v1 to manage updates of files..
I don't understand why it seems so slow on heroku - more power I tell you more power!!! Especially with Django, AMz S3 -maybe too many http reqs + large file size?
Should be blazing but maybe I have really bad connection.
BTW -
Great decision using zencoder from brightcove
Now my questions if no one has taken offense and there is a cool developer reading this post
Most important whens the go live date..
Fonts icons don't seem to work in firefox also these wont work on Blackberry 5,6 Maybe 7. Should do on 10. Consider SVG Sprites for BB
Is there going to be a new REST API for third party devs affiliates like me to work from and are you keeping the SG Extensions to metaweblog api or will that go?
- http://django-rest-framework.org would be nice hint hint..
Is the old mobile site going to be removed and all services from that die - I'm guessing so, sigh?..
I couldn't see SG Army are you killing off affiliates..
Any thoughts on the new chat service - have written a cool one using WebRTC, WebSockets sitting on Node could also host on Heroku and create a mobile app like WhatsApp for SG.
Are the RSS feeds staying or dying.
When are you bringing back the awesome playing cards. R3 would be nice.
Thanks - I'll be watching and playing PS love Django and the new site keep up the awesome work.
