I think I've posted about it here before, but on occasion I like to hop around the city to find an open mic night going on. I only do stand up and have doing it for about 2 years now. At first it was a curiosity to see what it would be like to be on stage like that. All alone.
Earlier in my life being on stage was usually with a band. I'd be the drummer hiding away in the pocket of the beat while the axe slingers and singers would be up front doing their thing. I was comfortable with that because no one really pays attention to the drummer. So there wasn't this stage freeze a lot of people get. I never experienced that sickening feeling of being the center of attention. Even during my marching band/jazz band years during vamps or solo's I did a quick 8-10 bars and resumed position. So getting on stage in front of a small crowd is about as nerve wracking as trying to pilot a plane missing a wing. It most likely ends in disaster.
So tonight wasn't really any different. I went to my 2nd usual spot and got dumped in the list before an acoustic guitar player and right after an acoustic guitar set. I was the awkward jelly in between their sweeping renditions of ballad-y Santana tracks. I only had about 10 minutes, but it was pretty bad. Like the poor soul who has to fly the wingless plane I too crashed and burned and left no survivors.
I take that back
There was one joke that actually played tonight. I was pretty proud of that.
anyways.
That felt good. Got to chat with an old friend tonight as well. Sometimes I forget how good my life is and how worse off I could be right now if things had played out differently.
I did three quick 10min sketches tonight as well. I have to keep my sketches going or else I lose that "rhythm" that you get into...dunno if that applies to anyone else, but that's how it gets for me sometimes. I get locked in and can pump out sketch after sketch. Since I was pulling chat duty and getting work done on the next game I decided just to do 3...

The most common criticism I've gotten from my figure modeling and character design classes has been my inconsistent lines. I get it, but sometimes I like it. I'm trying to get more consistency though. I just need to work on my hands a bit more, my carpal tunnel is starting to act up again.
I'm almost going to be 24. It doesn't feel like too long ago I was turning 23. I wonder what I'll do for my birthday this year...
What's currently playing on my headphones:
Twin Sister - All Around and Away We Go
Grizzly Bear - Southern Point
Washed Out - You and I
That's been my mood tonight. Pretty good stuff. I've been making more mixtapes and stuff just for kicks. Follow my twitter if you wanna get ahold of those. I may do one tomorrow...dunno
Inspiration for these things just comes and goes. The ones that stick are the ones that get posted.
It's 430am right now. I should get to bed. Got another day of something tomorrow. Probably call up my brother and see if he still wants to shoot that movie he's been talking about. It's always nice to take a break from the digital and play with some analog stuff.
I think that's it for me.
bye
love,
