Okay, here is something I learned at work today. You are only suppose to put one space after a period. I find this totally shocking. When I was in school, the teachers always said to put two spaces after a period. I find out today that I have been doing it wrong for so many years. I feel ashamed.

The two space theory comes from days of the typewriter. For those of you in the audience that do not know what a typewriter is, think of it as a computer keyboard where you type letter directly onto a piece of paper. I am not sure as to why there were two spaces to begin with, but I am sure it out there on the web. The reason for only using one space are, with today's computers, all spacing is proportional to the font being used. Not to mention any web browser totally ignores extra white space. It is more efficient to only tap the space once after a period than twice. If you look at any newspaper site, you will see that they only use one space.

So, I have been having a hard time adjusting to this new way of typing. Even now I have almost screwed up like 6 or 7 times. It is quite annoying to try to change your typing habits, especially when you have been doing the same thing for years.

In other news, I am up to a hug counts of 7 for 2009. I think somebody should start a pool to see how high this number will really grow to. Don't tell me about it as I don't want to alter my actions to get someone to win. Just saying.

I can't remember when I transitioned between two spaces to just one. But I do remember so many teachers reminding me that it's two not one. Some times I still find myself doing 2. I mean really, what's an extra space gonna hurt?

It's due to the internets. I remember I found this out a few years ago myself, but I don't remember the exact reason why. Oh, looking up I see you found the reason why. Good work.

It took me a little while to adjust as well. Even now I will occasionally put two spaces after a period. It's an adjustment, but think of all the bandwidth you're saving by eliminating one _ per sentence. Thanks to you someone is downloading porn that much faster.

i remember learning that in school as well...
said to use two spaces... then in high school they said to use one...
i use two sometimes still...
