i gave a student that i am trying intervene with my copy of Sherman Alexie's "The Lone Ranger, Tonto Fist Fight in Heaven".
he is this sophomore, stoner, intelligent, politically minded student with a heavy Indian background.
he took the book, started reading it that day. right before lunch, he stopped in my room and was telling me about it, he was so excited and talking so fast i couldnt understand what he was saying.
next day, i notice he carries it with him everywhere he goes. i see his parents for Parent/Teacher conference and i tell them "i gave him this book, i dont know if you have seen him with it..."
his mom interrupts me and says, "he called me right away to tell me about it."

I'll be in Seattle this weekend! I cant wait to see my girl...
after the accident i avoided meds and went straight for massage therapy. that really helped with the whiplash. i can feel the muscles releasing. the bad thing? no jiujitsu still
i am cleared to go now, but life keeps getting in the way of gym time.
and now i am sitting here getting ready for work, i have breakfast duty at the school. ugh.

So 2010 was wild.
I managed to graduate with my bachelors, get published, get accepted to two MFA programs (i picked Antioch), almost lost my house (that was a battler), get a teaching job, meet THE ONE, get engaged, win a house makeover (shit my house looks good), was a in a car wreck and....
And 2011? I am on the way to pick up a new vechicle (hopefully, and no, it isnt brand new), will move to Seattle (that is where she is from) and.... who knows what else.
Happy New Year!

i have this student that has just taken off with everything i have thrown at him in terms of literature. he is a sophomore, and is so conscious of social justice, and is always quick to defend the down trodden in school and the community.
i have shown him Alexie, Blake, Hikmet and a few others. students like him make teaching worth if for sure.
in January i get to teach his class creative writing, i cant wait to see what he does with it.
yes, the school i teach in is so small that i am the only English teacher. so i have each class at once; it is ninth grade English, tenth grade English, and so on...

Brief update:
Met a woman in CA when I was at school. I love her. She lives in Seattle, been a wild and great long distance relationship, and I will be there soon.
Teaching has been good, interesting, but good. The kids I teach are so sheltered, and there are only 31 in the whole high school.
Writing has been okay, the damned alternative teaching license thing is killing me, it is unorganized and difficult to deal with. UGH.
i have read some crazy cool books lately.

the last month has been wild.
i was hired by a small high school to teach English, even though i dont have a teaching certificate, they will help me get my alternative license.
i went to Antioch for my first residency in the MFA program. i love the program.
while there i met a woman from Seattle. fell in love. it happened fast, but over a distance. in 10 days i'm leaving to spend four with her.

two more job interviews today, leave for L.A. on Thursday.
it has been a wild couple of weeks with interviews and teaching, and now i get to make it even worse by heading to Antioch, my new student orientation is on Thursday at 6pm. i'm excited to be writing again. with everything that has gone on in my life, i have been to distracted, but with all the interviews i have been through something will come about and another part of my life will be settled...
at leas i hope so.

more combat, more stress relief...
and other things are going well in my life finally, i can see the light at the end of the tunnel. only a few more things left to do.
oh, and i have had job interviews. one today, for a position i didnt apply for, i just inquired about. one last week, they really like me, and have asked me for a return interview (but the commute is 50mi one way), and one next week...
something has got to stick.
i have been teaching three reading classes for the summer. critical reading. i'm pushing the kids through really looking at the books, one class is just running with it, they are doing a feminist critique of The Good Earth by Pearls S. Buck. we will switch gears to use Marxism on it.... these are high school kids, i hope they take something from it...

i ended up with one B, two A-, and four A this semester. i kicked the fuck out of it.
but i come off the semester and get into a battle with my lender over my home, these guys are a bunch of sharks (America's Service Company, a division of Wells Fargo). this has been the worst ever. and then i find a great resource for legal aid here in CO, fill out the application and i feel all
about my prospects. then i get rejected by them due to a "conflict of interest", apparently their head attorney knows my ex and has decided that she cant help me, even though the case in no shape or form involves my ex. great, and that effectively locked me out of every office in the state of theirs, which sucks because they are highly regarded.
good week in the gym, one night of Judo, three straight nights of jiu-jitsu.
and now i need sleep

so tomorrow is it, graduation... Grades are posted on Tuesday, but I am confident that my grades are high.
what a semester, 21 credit hours of upper division English. tons of reading, tons of papers....
I'm glad I am done, and I am looking forward to Antioch's MFA program
