Oh, have I been up to some naughty things...

I will miss Detroit, in all its chaotic splendor, in its filth and garbage-laden glamour, in its never-ending stream of beautiful and condemned buildings lying here, waiting for me. I've been having the time of my life, cashing unemployment checks that dont even cover rent, and instead of job-hunting, I took to the road. Oh, it was worth it.

I didnt wear high heels this time, and havent been back to church in Detroit, instead filling my time with what may be my favourite pastime that I've been in need of.

Sure, you face the floors giving out from below and above you, cuts from broken glass, all those rusty nails, the law, and above all, a local inhabitant with no hope and no fear with rage in his eyes, but isnt it worth it?

If you've never seen a burnt-out city right before sunset from atop one of the most beautiful and broken buildings you've ever seen, its time to gauge your eyes out and throw yourselves at my feet. Such a life is a life wasted. I believe that any wars may have created more beauty that a city untouched, productive, thriving, and warm.

Within those buildings a vison arises, creates a sense of unreality, doubt, panic... where am I? Will I make it out? Peering fourteen stories down a broken and hollow elevator shaft is nothing that life, drugs, love or movies have been able to do. It reverberates down to my core.

Ok children enough of the blight. Roll your windows up.

Detroit is loved by many. Which is why it is even more melancholy to watch mayor after mayor, and person after person destroy it.

I completely get what you are saying. I have never felt so at peace and dismantled at once as when I am scouting around construction sites and exploring old buildings...something about the space, the former life, it's intoxicating. We should go knock about some places together, could be interesting.

i havent been in the michigan central train station in years, but i cant forget the seemingly endless flights of stairs, looking down through smashed windows, watching the sunset from the ledge... or the walk out at eleven pm, groping walls and hoping you remember which step is missing the stone...
i miss detroit too...

I used to practically live at MCS (the abandoned train station in Detroit). There are some EXTREMELY hard to get to places (the old stationmaster office, the sub basement, and the library in particular) and some of the most beautiful view of the city from the roof. I have it all mapped out. It really was an obsession for a while.

so why are you leaving Detroit?

Reminds me of "convertible houses" in Yugoslavia and Bosnia. On either side of the river Drina, most of the houses are bombed out, no windows, no roofs, just shells with little old ladies still cooking soup for lunch and hanging out the laundry to dry.
