I just finished watching The Hurt Locker and I guess you could say it's a character sketch. The problem is the character has no arc. For two hours there is action scene after action scene, all of which hold up fine individually, yet don't gel into a cohesive whole with any plot or character development to provide a driving narrative. The last 10 minutes were the most interesting and could have been developed into something about the contrast of Iraq to America for an action junkie cowboy. Unfortunately two hours were burned showing me the action junkie cowboy stuff even though that was evident after the first 45 minutes. After that, there wasn't enough time left to use the ending to present an actual story.
The movie wasn't bad, I just didn't think it was all that great either. 3 out of 5
