A Thought.
A few months ago I was on Flickr. I follow various photographers you never heard of from all over the world. One such photographer is a beautiful woman from the UK. She does many self portraits as well as photos of friends and family. Her style of photography is great and I am admired and inspired by her work. One inspiration was a photo she took of a friend. She did a great make up job on her friend but used Ivy to accent the makeup and kinda frame the models face. It was well done and looked great.
This got me thinking about my work and what I could do. At my parents house I was working in the back yard when I walked by a hill of ferns that I had planted and I thought, " hey a fern would work awesome for a plant based portrait". I thought about it, maybe taking a small fern and framing the face, or taking the fern apart and doing something like that. I have also thought about taking a giant fern and perhaps sticking it (somehow) to a models back. I kept thinking about it but seeing as the fall is coming and the ferns will wilt this year, I will have to wait.
The thing is that this got me thinking which led to the thought I had. I have mentioned over the time I have been on SG I wanted a Tattoo but didn't really know what I wanted. I am seriously thinking about getting a tat of a fern on perhaps my right lower leg. I have seen some amazing work done as far as trees and flowers and organic items... Why not a fern? As I started to think about it, and this is weird, but ferns hold a lot of meaning for me. My entire life, my parents house has been located bordering a forested area. I grew up running around in the woods, I learned a lot in the woods, I have been scared emotionally and physically in the woods, I have felt great fear, and great love for that area. Through the entire time I walked through great patches of ferns. I know their smell when they are broken, and I love the feeling of the soft ones as they cross your leg walking through.
Ferns are a simple plant, often neglected and overlooked, but if you really look at one, they are quite intricate and beautiful. Ferns are delicate, you can easily break them, every year they wilt and die in a mass of dry dead ferns, but like a phoenix, they rise in fiddleheads from the remains of the generations before. Ferns are delicate but can grow in the darkest areas, with as little as 1/4 inch of soil. They are amazing plants, and I have always enjoyed them. Hell I even got to study them greatly when I was in college and I took plant growth and function. As an artist I love the texture and the detail as well as their simplicity. I think a fern, or ferns would come out great as a tattoo, and they would symbolize me in many ways, not to mention I like the color green
The thing is I am not sure about it. I am not sure if it would look cool, or if I should get a group of ferns or just one, or what kind. I am also not sure if it would look stupid or if I would be looked at as being too feminine on me. Not that it matters much. I also wonder if I could take getting it. I don't really want a super small fern, I would like an actual piece something very intricate detailed and perhaps large. I have never gotten a tattoo and wonder if I could take getting a large piece done.
Anyway, I have a few pictures of ferns on my flickr page I will put below, some showing shape, or texture even color, as well as fiddleheads. I am just trying to think about what could be done and how I could do it. Any opinions would be great, I am still not sure about this.
