Getting the relevant background in mathematics and logic to understand, even at a crude, simplistic level, the nature and structure of infinity and all the related realms opened up by modern set theory: difficult.

Trying to explain elementary mistakes about the infinite to students with absolutely no background in either logic or mathematics: infinitely more difficult.

The payoff though is having those one or two people who get the general idea and come at you with an excited look and just the right kind of question they should be asking.

Were it not for that, I would be inclined to cite Morissey re: looking for a job and then finding a job.

I have not posted in a while partially because no one really reads this and partially because I have been busy trying to fake Munchausen's syndrome, with little success.

I have landed myself back in my homeland, and I am at a bit of a loss about how to move forward. Life has basically been kicking me in the nuts repetitively, and I am trying to figure out how the hell I should be guarding my crotch, as it were.

I don't need to sleep or eat, I'll smoke a thousand cigarettes...

I am suffering from a case of sleep madness at the moment. productivity is up, coherence is down.

these days are so nurturing. when you are gone, I'll eat and sleep away my days again.

I must say, I love the boredoms...

I saw them play a few nights ago, and they put on an amazing show. the one down side of the evening was that it made me feel really old standing in a crowd with a bunch of youngins trying really hard to look cool and impress their friends. that is one of the reasons I rarely go to shows anymore.
still, I could not miss out on eye and his seven neck guitar tower.

the days they do fly by...
things are middling to fair, and I suppose that is not something about which one should complain. I have a big project on the horizon which is getting started finally.
on a random note, I am really diggin the numero group's eccentric soul series. I have three volumes of it now, and all of them are top notch.
also, I have been thinking about carbon offsets. they seem to be the modern-day equivalent indulgences for the environnmental set. I wonder if one could start a business providing moral offests in this day in age... for each moral transgression you make, you pay a fee to compensate which goes to support organizations which deal with the ramifications of the relevant type of moral transgression. I am very worried that people would buy into it...
that scares me.

hohum.
I have not felt inspired to write anything here for awhile, and I suppose I only do so now because I am rather bored and about 3/4 of the way into a bottle of whiskey.
I have spend a good deal of time thinking lately, and none of it makes sense.

everytime a new day dawns, the sun always has to set.

it is finally cooling off and raining from time to time. this puts me in a much better mood.
work is going very slowly. although I should be focusing on this one project, I keep finding other things which are not it that I want to work on. I think that these other things are enticing me, at least in part, because I do not have to work on them. I really should stop doing that.

I just finished reading The World Without Us, which I recommend. the overall theme of the books is examining what would happen to the earth if today all humans beings just vanished. the author's pursuit of the theme sometimes gets a little heavy-handed, but overall it was quite interesting to find out what things would fall apart faster than one would expect (e.g. manhattan) and what things would stick around for a very long time (e.g. plastic).

I am off to listen to the smiths and think about some translation paradoxes.
