As often happens after learning too late about a tragedy, I could hardly sleep last night. Since learning of Daniel Robert Epstein's passing, I have posted one poem written two years ago now and now have written one just for his memory. I wish I knew where to send it for his family. Daniel once told me my poetry was inspirational, and was much more personal than most gifts. I wrote a poem at Chanukkah for him and his wife Andrea, regardless that I had never met either of them except through e-mail and telephone conversations over the past two years. The poem I wrote at Chanukkah was titled Celebration of Light. The poem I wrote for him last night is titled A Last Shalom. Here is that poem. I would like to send it to his family, with the background picture included someday.

A Last Shalom
This is the first I knew,
About your final day.
For the longest hours,
I knew not what to say.
A heavy heart I share,
As I write this final tome.
The words come pouring out,
Within this last shalom.
So I remember back,
Not so long ago.
About the words I wrote,
How little did I know.
A last shalom I give,
In your memory.
A lasting salute,
For your family.
A friend you had become,
One I could respect.
Yet this has become,
What I'd least expect.
So here I sit and write,
For you this one last time.
Shalom my dear friend,
You live within this rhyme.
Written with fond memories for Daniel Robert Epstein who passed away June 13, 2007, may your words and laughter live on forever.
