"BRUSHES WITH FAME" -- A few years ago, our city got a visit from Tyra Banks. One of our drugstores sold the most Covergirl cosmetics in North America, so they sent her here as a reward (?). I got her autograph on her beauty book which was just out. They made us pre-purchase it before she would sign it. She must have been tired, as she hardly spoke and barely lifted her head for photos etc. I barely spoke to her, lest she sick her bodyguard on me!

The only other "supermodel" I've met (not counting the many Playmates and Page 3 girls) was Tricia Helfer. She has since gone on to acting (she's Number Six in the new "Battlestar Galactica"). She's just a country girl at heart - she was born in Bashaw, the potato capital of Alberta. She came home to support and model in a local designers fashion event. It was staged in a parkade, of all places! She was nice to me when I went up to her table for an autograph (barely anyone did).

The most influential person I've met is Hugh M. Hefner, the founder & creator of the Playboy empire. I've met him several times, such as when he's appeared at Glamourcon in L.A. I've also had the great fortune to visit the Playboy Mansion twice. The first visit was as one of a group of 15 Playboy collectors who got a private tour and breakfast with Hef. That happened in April 1997, before he'd split from Kimberly Conrad and re-joined the party scene. The next time I went to the Mansion was in July 1999, for an invite-only 45th Anniversary dinner party. It wasn't the wildest-ever Playboy party (never saw so much as a bare boob), but never-the-less it was memorable, and packed with celebrities.

While I add some random thoughts, please take a moment and consider donating or re-donating to the South Asia Tsunami Relief Effort. I'm watching the second Canadian telethon on CTV right now. I made a C$500 donation last month to the International Red Cross relief fund, which is on top of my monthly $16 donation to the general IRC relief program. With tax time coming, think of it as another way to deny the tax dept. a little moola.

Before the telethon, I watched part of Alice Through The Looking Glass, starring the sweet & delightful Kate Beckinsale. My appreciation of her talent and beauty has grown considerably in the past year, especially since seeing her in Pearl Harbor and Laurel Canyon. She's building quite a long list of credits. But why are her eyes always so sad?

Earlier today, I read a journal entry by Rx in which she gave her reaction to her now former friend's poorly disguised "shoot" proposal. Below is my response that story (her reply appears in my Jan 28/05 journal.) ---

"I've been on dozens of paid semi-pro shoots where the money came from my own pocket or costs were shared with fellow photographers. While shoots can be incredibly sexually charged at times, it's no place for a letcher and certainly no time to be seeking a "relationship". Thoughts like that are best kept to one's self.

It has frequently been suggested to me by others (parents included, which is why I stopped talking to them 9 years ago) that I'm into nude & glamour photography for the sex. Sure, it is SEXY to photograph beautiful naked women, and yes I'd have to be DEAD not to get aroused in their company or when I'm looking at the work I created with them. But if my models weren't so complimentary of me, my conduct, and the results of my work, then it would all be just a cheap thrill, wouldn't it?

I joined Suicide Girls because I saw some lovely photos of beautiful women, and because I saw that they and their fans/friends could express themselves relativley freely in a moderated environment. Believe me, I belong to several Yahoo discussions groups where "open minds" are equal to "potty mouths".

I live in the northern Bible belt (Canadian prairies), where an oppressive moral majority uses political power to suppress expressions of human nature. This is partly why Edmonton has the highest per capita sex abuse and family crime rates in all of Canada. Winter lasts half of the year here, which makes it hard to get out and enjoy the company of others. Hence all of the problems like depression and suicide.

I guess if that guy wanted a "quickie", he really should have called up a prostitute. Bravo to you Rx for giving him the boot instead!"
