June 13th, 2012, A.T. & T. Park.

Jake, my 14 year old son, sings in a local youth choir and they were invited to sing the National Anthem ahead of the San Francisco Giants hosting the Houston Astros, an annual affair that this choir has been involved with for a few years. Being a baseball kook I naturally was thrilled. My little sister was visiting from Boston, a Red Sox season ticket holder, so she joined us, too.

It's a terrible iPhone picture but it's taken from our cheap (but very nice) seats in the upper deck. It was from this vantage point that we witnessed baseball history being made.

After four innings I looked over at the line score and noticed something, which I shared with my sister thus: "The Giants have a bunch of hits, but the other guys not so many", which caused her to look as well and elicited a knowing nod. After the fifth she noted "I don't recall anyone walking, either" which gave me cause to cautiously nod as well. As a rule you do not mention that a no-hitter is under way, unless your team is getting no-hit. It's one of the many baseball superstitions that even people who consider themselves to be free of such silliness, like me, find themselves observing.

Great plays and magical pitching followed and many knowing glances between many a fan, until we were standing as one and the twenty seventh batter hit a grounder to third, which the third baseman handled and delivered with a mighty throw to the first baseman, who caught it with his foot on the base and the umpire called the twenty seventh out of the twenty second perfect game in the history of Major League Baseball, and the Giants very first in the club's 130 year history. Easy to say it was the greatest pitching performance i have ever seen, but not by so much as one might think. I put it ahead of Pedro Martinez' six shutout innings in relief for the Red Sox against the Indians in the 1999 playoffs by enough that I don't question it, which is perhaps as great a feat as the perfect game itself, because Pedro was that great, too.

I love baseball.

congrats to Jake, and to you for witnessing this game.
I'm not too high on baseball, but I do enjoy going to the games on occasion. I'll be trucking off to see the Reds play in a few weeks. I doubt I'll witness anything so historic, but . . . I guess the beauty of all sport, is that you never really know.

I'll have to be honest and say I don't know squat about baseball, but I'm glad you had a good time (at least I think you had a good time, can't understand much of it). biggrin

I know nothing of baseball, but I am thrilled that your kiddo got to sing there. That's such a cool thing.

Very envious that you got to see that game, and happy for you that you had family participating in the event in some small way. I've always loved the way the Sox booth team dealt with a potential no hitter; either Remy or Orcillo would just say something to the effect of "There's something special in the air at Fenway tonight", while the camera would do a lingering close-up of the scoreboard.

Congrats for your son!
I'm interested a little in baseball but I don't know enough to fully appreciate the sport. I look anyway Orioles' results. Why the Orioles? Because Baltimore, and I'm a big fan of Foot US and especially the Ravens' defense (and the Packers and the Broncos a little)!

I was raised by the kookiest of the baseball kooks known to mankind. MY parents took regular summer long cross coast and country driving trips just so they could hit every city's triple A team and get their pennant. When The Phils won in 1980 my mother woke my sleeping brother and I from our beds so we could all get in the car and honk (I was alll...the fuck?!), keeping us home the next day from school to attend the parade.
I soooo get it.
And it is soooo awesome.
Many congrats!

I am sharing this version my daughter's boyfriend just did recently at a local game. That ain't no picnic to sing and it always sort of makes me tear up. I am such a poose.

I really liked AT & T PArk. In the next week I'm going to be catching games at Wrigley, Miller Park, and U.S. Cellular Field.

Admittedly, I'm not a fan, but I do have to respect something like that. I'm glad you got to witness it, a superb highlight.

That must have been a really proud and shining moment for a dad, and at such a memorable game. It's like the universe aligned to make that moment happen.

Very cool.

I came close about 5 years ago, when Scott Baker went 8 1/3 perfect against the Royals at the dome. I was so bummed when the ump screwed him and the 26th man walked. Then he gave up a hit.

In a world where much is forgotten, things like that stick with you.

Now that sounds like a very good idea. Refreshing. 22 ounces, not an imperial pint, not 24 ounces, but 22. Pull up a chair. Put your feet up. Unless you're wearing a kilt and want to preserve your modesty.

Your kiddo sounds like a great fellow. No doubt it is in the genes. I did not know he had a half sister.
