Went and saw The Hobbit tonight. First I just need to say frack you Emagine Canton for having not one but BOTH of your real butter dispensors broken! The main reason I drove my ass out to your - albeit very nice - theater is for the rich, creamy taste of real butter upon your overpriced popcorn. To frell with you, ya fargin' bastiches!

Whew ok that being said onto the movie. I must say I really enjoyed the movie, all 2-3/4 hrs of it. I'll admit though I enjoyed LotR better. I saw LotR before reading the novel, where as I've already read The Hobbit. I dunno if that's the reason why I didn't mind the changes from the novel-to-movie as much in LotR as in The Hobbit.

SPOILERS! (Click to view)
The two largest and most noticeable changes I could think of off hand were the scene with the mountain trolls and the flight from the goblin city.

In the former instead of their being a great fight between the dwarves and trolls (only being stopped due to Bilbo being threatened) in the book each dwarf gets waylayed seperately by the trolls and easily captured. Plus Bilbo has to stall them for far longer then shown in-film.

In the latter Bilbo has t not only get away from Gollum but then sneak past goblins on guard who had fled after the retreating dwarves and Gandaulf. Then once reunited they are chased by regular wolves (not worgs) and goblins. After chasing the wolves off with fire the goblons turn the tables and try burning Thorin's party out of the trees; this is when the eagles arrive and whisk them to safety - without a last ditch fight as seen in-film.

Now I know why both scenes were changed - not enough action. And I'll admit when I read The Hobbit and the troll scene I thought "come on these are dwarves, wtf they are going down like bitches!" But seeing it changed on film....I dunno, I'm still mulling it over....

Ok so all of that being said I still highly recommend seeing the movie. And for those who haven't read The Hobbit then there shouldn't be any issues at all. And I think for most who have read the novel first any differences are tolerable. smile

Thanks! Yeah, I'm slowly starting to find a little extra time here and there to draw, so hopefully that means I can get some of my art done. smile

I've been really wanting to see the Hobbit! I didn't read your spoilers, cuz duh, spoilers. lol I read the book as a kid, but have forgotten so much of it since then, that differences in book versus movie shouldn't be a problem for me. smile

Thanks for your analysis of The Hobbit movie, you've confirmed some of my worst fears.
I've not seen it yet, but I've read the book dozens of times. I was kinda interested in seeing it, until I heard they were doing 3 films instead of the original 2 films Jackson intended.
This to me seemed a bit overkill and made me worry about how much was going to be expanded on to the point it was unrecognisable. I mean fair enough 3 films for LOTR, as there were 3 books, but turning a less than 300 page book into 3 films? That's a bit much...
I saw a bit of footage of when Bilbo meets Gollum on a TV talkshow (Martin Freeman was being interviewed), and I thought they'd destroyed my favourite chapter of the book "Riddles in the Dark". eeek

I think I'll save my money and wait until it's released on DVD, then I'll rent it, rather than paying to watch it on the big screen, as I'll no doubt be complaining bitterly throughout about all the changes. tongue

and i agree with you on my blog-without adversity and challenges, things do tend to stagnate. i do believe that's one of the many lessons for this period in my life.
