I told her when I went to Iraq that if she ever feels the need to feel sorry for herself, or for me, she should drag her ass down to a veteran's hospital or a homeless shelter or something like that, because I knew--and I'm sure your guy knows too--that there are a lot people in this world who have it worse than the soldiers in Iraq. Find spouses of the fallen, or families of the injured and help them, show them that they haven't been forgotten.
As for the holidays, find some way to make them even more meaningful than if he was home. Use that time to make life better for someone else. And when he is back, those holidays may mean more than they ever did before.
