People of SG...

I am looking to sign some new acts to my music agency so I am looking for recommendations from you lovely people.

The brief is very simple:
1 – They have to be fucking good
2 – They need an agent

I don’t really care about what style or genre they are in, so long as they can play live. They can be an unsigned UK/European band that are going places, an overseas band looking to break into UK/Europe, or even an established act that are looking for new agents.

Being a modest fellow I don’t like to blow my own trumpet, but as this is business; Tooty tooty toot. The agency I represent is a big hitter in the live music business; we represent some of the biggest touring acts in the world and won the agent of the decade in our industry awards. Our main market is the UK, but we book tours in Europe and the rest of the world (outside of USA). For an act to be added to our roster is a fantastic opportunity and we can match the ambitions of the very best artists in the world.

I get directly canvassed by a lot of bands and it is very difficult to find acts I like using this method. For a start they are plugging themselves so reading their biog is futile, and for every good acts there could be 20 that are a total waste of time. I really hate wasting my time. I am much happier researching bands that come recommended by someone whose musical taste’s I respect. So if you know of someone who fits the brief and you genuinely recommend them then please let me know and I will check them out.

Thanks eversomuch for your time.

This weekend sees the biggest arts festival in Europe celebrate it’s 40th anniversary. For me Glastonbury is the ultimate festival for any music fan and the reason I got myself into this business in the first place.

If you don’t know much about Glastonbury then allow me to summarise; Glastonbury is an arts festival of massive ambition hosting 150,000 fun seekers for a long weekend of music, art, comedy and culture. The site is located on the intersection of 2 lay lines in the Vale of Avalon (the legendary resting place of King Arthur) and is steeped in mysticism and folk lore. Not into that pagan mumbo jumbo? Me either, but from the moment you drive past Stonehenge on your way to the festival you just get caught up in the glorious spectacle of it all. Watching the sunrise over the stone circle in the sacred space is not something that can be easily explained, but is the closest thing to a religious experience I have ever had.

Set against this backdrop of this hippy lunacy is the best music line up you could dream of from blockbusting headliners to obscure foreign indie bands. There really is something for everyone and plenty of new stuff to discover whilst drifting around the 45 (count ‘em) different stages. Just add any mind altering substance of your choosing and get lost in the fabulous craziness of it all.

Personally I am most looking forward to The Dead Weather on the Pyramid Stage. A collision of the best creative talents from either side of the Atlantic. Alison Mossheart and Jack White’s musical marriage made in heaven. The sexiest woman in rock taking the lead vocal and the fucking god-like-genius on drums, it is going to be awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww-sum.

Do I have the best job in the world?

I am back from my trip to the Isle of Wight organising our fabulous festival which exceeded every single one of my expectations.

And to think I considered leaving this job in pursuit of something new. Nothing I have ever done in my work life has ever come close to the satisfaction I get from this show.

Here’s a little taster of the weekend from Jay-Z’s Friday night performance. He took an audience of disbelieving non-hip hop fans and held them in the palm of his hand for 2 hours. What an incredible performer. The crowd reaction when Kanye West came on stage is up there as one of the best moments I have ever experienced in a live show.

In two weeks time my friends and I are organising a little party on the Isle of Wight and everyone is invited. Please come and bring a tent, a friend and all the alcopops you can carry.

Click the link and play the video to see what I get up to when I’m not playing on Suicide Girls. Actually I can play and work at the same time. Who says men can’t multitask?

Volcanic ash cloud has a silver lining.

Two and a half hours into my return flight from my 2 week holiday in Mauritius we were turned around and sent back to the airport. 6 days later we were back on the same plane and flying to an airport that was closed. Luckily UK air space re-opened 15 minutes before we were due to land making us the 2nd plane back at Heathrow. I feel so lucky to be back knowing thousands of people are still stranded. Good luck kids, hope you all make it back quickly and safely.

Being stranded in paradise is not as nice as it sounds. It was fucking stressful not knowing from one minute to the next how or when we were going to get home. I do have a nice tan though.

It was worth it for the party on the plane home. 12 hours locked in a flying pub with my new best friends. Priceless.

Does anyone else want to be Dave Grohl as much as I do?

My head is all over the place at the moment, so this blog may end up being the same.

2010 is really chucking everything it can at me. I’m getting numb to it all. It’s an age old defence mechanism and it works for me. The trouble with numbing yourself is that occasionally you let your guard slip and before you know it, it all comes flooding out uncontrollably.

We promoted a gig last night in a little local venue. It’s been a series of gigs really, a kind of residency where we invite musicians we like to come along and perform, collaborate, experiment and just have a great time and create something cool. It has been a massive success. I’ve met some really incredible new talent, not just from London, but from all over the UK and then Australia, USA and South Africa.

I have worked with Starsailor for years. I have been their champion before I even met them or did any shows with them. James is an unbelievable talent and I think his best stuff is still ahead of him. It blows me away every time I hear him play this particular song. It has a lyric in the chorus that goes “If it wasn’t for the good souls life would not matter”. It gets me every time. I’ve long decided that this is the song I want playing when my coffin disappears into the flames. If it wasn’t for the good souls life would not matter. It’s just the most beautiful sentiment I’ve ever heard. The light seems to be going out of one of the good souls in my life and hearing it again just triggered an emotional release and the numbness lifted, if only for a moment.

James invited a young singer songwriter along to perform last night. Her name is Lizzie Pattinson and she was really great. I think she may have a music career ahead of her. She’s got a difficult job to set herself apart from the hundreds of other talented singer songwriters, but undoubtedly she’s got great potential. Anyway, while I was having a bit of a man-weep during James’s set I turned around to see Lizzie’s brother standing behind me with his girlfriend. It was embarrassing enough to be seen sniffling in public, and all the more embarrassing in front of Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart.

So my mum has had a stroke and it was a big one. She’s pretty wiped out and currently in a specialist ward starting the long road to recovery. She’s already showing small daily improvements, but there’s a long way to go.

It has really made me realise that you need to bank the good times to have enough reserves to get you through the bad times. Even those days where you feel a mediocre should be appreciated, because they are bliss compared to the bad days.

Sorry for the downer, but I wanted to see if writing about it would be cathartic and it seems to be working. Looking at boobies is also helping...
