Hydroponics! How's that for a sexy lead? There's a cool little startup here in Berlin called Efficient City Farming, and they have developed a system for growing vegetables and fish in a virtuous circle that needs less input and produces less waste, also needs less space and can be done near to where the products are consumed, making do with less wasteful transportation. I did say this was sexy, didn't I?

Anyways, yesterday they invited sponsors for 150 Tilapia bass - for € 20 or maybe approx. $ 25 you get to sponsor the care and feed of your very own bass. Now for the sad but tasty part, at the end of September there's a big grill-out where all the bass are marinated and grilled and everyone gets together to enjoy. So the wife and I already know what's for dinner on 09/27 :-)

Here on SG, I doubt that he's on many people's fave lists... but Irving Berlin, born on this day 125 years ago, is truly a giant of songwriting. It's amazing to me that this little Jewish boy from Siberia not only survived the antisemitic climate in tsarist Russia, the cramped passage to the new world, and the no less cramped and crowded living conditions in turn-of-the-19th-century ghetto New York, but thrived and became rich and famous. And not just that, but he had amazing longevity, too, living to 101. I sent him a fan letter in 1981, when he was 93, and while I didn't hear back from him personally, I did get a letter from his longtime secretary Hilda Schneider which I've kept to this day.
