So I have posted a few pictures of the back piece that I have been working on getting completed for the past few weeks. Overall it is a memorial piece with individual generations of American Soldiers from the Revolutionary War, Civil War, WWI, WWII and the modern era. Each soldier is situated in between a roman style pillar. At the very top we have the 9/11 landscape with smoke coming out of the Twin Towers with the Stars and Stripes in the background.
Once this is done, there will be the phrase "Ave Mortuis Victor" which translates to "Hail the victorious dead." I had the inspiration for that from the Lord of the Rings trilogy during the scene where the king of Rohan honors the fallen in his court after the Battle of Helm's Deep. Then finally at the very bottom underneath the soldiers, there will be skulls situated like you can find in the catacombs of Rome.
So far I have taken 3 sessions to work on this piece and I really hope I can get it done as soon as I can. I came up with the concept for this piece while I was in Afghanistan, as I had been wanting to do a memorial piece for a while before I came up with the concept. My artist doing the work is Chris Roy at Slangin Ink in San Antonio and he has been doing some damn high quality work even while I've been twitching here and there from the pain. He's a great guy to work with.
