In all honesty, I cannot say my father-in-law is "good for nothing". It seems that whenever we have him over to watch the Twins play on TV they win. The cost is gas for two round trips to his house (he doesn't drive), dinner and a case of beer. For the home games, it's way cheaper than going. As for the road games, read my previous blog.

Went to the Twins - Mariners game tonight and saw a few interesting things. My first homerun review by the umpires. The second base ump got it wrong and the crowd knew it. They looked at it and got it right.

Documentary film maker Ken Burns threw out the first pitch.

Got to see Matt Capps get his first save as a Twin. He throws hard. Stiil not sure they needed a closer.

The Twins are now 3-0 when my wife and I see them at Target Field. biggrin
They are 0-5 when we see them on the road.mad

So far we've been to:

Yankee Stadium
Fenway Park
Miller Park
Rogers Center
Comerica Park

In September we're going to:

Progressive Field
US Cellular Field
Kauffman Stadium

The travel has been a blast, but I wish they would win a fucking game. I'm beginning to take it personally.frownblackeyed

But perhaps the best moment of the evening didn't even happen on the field, it happened in the stands. They had already done their between inning "kiss cam" earlier in the game. They were just doing generic crowd shots and happened to spot a couple of hotties. At least one of the girls knew they were on the big screen, She grabbed the other one and turned her head towards herself and was about to give her a huge kiss kisskisskissfull on the lips when the camera quick cut away. There was a low groan from the crowd. Every guy in the park was ready for some girl on girl action.oinkoinkoinkwink

In a fit of boredom I stretched my nipples to 4 gauge today. I was at 6 for a year and a half, and had been thinking about it for a while. It went very smoothly, and virtually painless unlike previous stretches.

After 7 years of waiting, it finally happened yesterday. I was able to move my seats for the Wild below row 9. I spotted the seatsfrom the far end of the arena, and ran all the way over, only to find one of the reps trying to grab them for someone else. Fortunately I was able to pull rank with my lower priority number. The beauty of row 8 is the protective end net is no longer in the way.

If that wasn't enough, I won the drawing for a game used hockey stick. My wife suggested we go to the casino since my luck was running so high. I decided to quit while I was ahead.biggrin

Lots of fanfare and hype...

Not having anything better to do, when I heard that the Twins were having an open house Saturday morning at Target Field, the wife and I got up early to check it out. It only cost $2 to get in. We got downtown at 9:30 and rode the light rail from the dome to Target Field. The U of M baseball team was on our train since they were playing Lousiana Tech at 1:00 as part of the event.

Considering it was March, the weather wasn't too bad, though the wind was a little raw. We did end up buying gloves to keep our hands warm.

Of all the food items we sampled the hot chocolate was the best. The foot long hot dog was pretty good. The $10 steak sandwich was over cooked and under seasoned and a big disappointment. The pizza was just OK.

Personally, I was never unhappy with the Metrodome. I liked the fact that the game always started on time rain or shine, and hot or cold it was always comfortable.

It has taken a couple of days to figure out what I want in a ball park, but I think I have it now. I want a good seat close to the action for a reasonable price. I want a good hot dog and maybe some peanuts brought to me while I watch the game. I want to see the Twins play well and hopefully win. I want to be able to park close and leave quickly after the game. I want to know that the game will be played on time and in its entirety. Target Field is none of that.

That said, I'm not thrilled with Target Field. I never was since the day it was first announced. This is really just a monument to big business, crazy salaries and fan appeasement. My wife is not nearly the cynic that I am, but she didn't spend 20 seasons at the Metrodome.

In May and June we'll be traveling to 3 of the most interesting ballparks, Yankee Stadium, Fenway Park, and Miller Park. Maybe my opinion will soften after that, though I have my doubts.

Check one off my bucket list...

Tonight we went to roller derby. I think the main motivation was to people watch, so from that perspective it was fun and interesting. Lots of piercings and tattoos there.

When we bought the tickets we paid a couple bucks more to sit trackside, not fully understanding what that meant. We quickly found out that meant we had two reserved squares of concrete floor, with the potential for catching flying roller girls. We quickly chose a couple of chairs10 feet back. My ass is too old for that shit.

The opening act was called Chicks on Sticks. Six women on what looked to be 6 foot tall stilts did a sort of dance while twirling flags. Pretty impressive especially when I can barely walk on the ground with shoes these days.

As a sport, roller derby seems a little silly, and both matches were blowouts. Tonight was the last regular match of the season. It might have been better if we had been following it from the beginning of the year, and had a team to cheer for.

Maybe next year.smile

Clumpy 3: The Return of the Boot

Back when I broke my foot the first time in September my wife gave me the nickname Clumpy.

Clearly casts and I don't get along. After two and a half weeks I developed sores on my foot, and it became necessary to switch to a boot, in order to change the dressing.

The boot is just a fancy splint held together with velcro straps. It has advantages and disadvantages. I can take it off to get in the shower which is much better than wrapping and bagging the cast. The bad part is, it's so bulky, I have to take the boot off to get my pants on and off. The alternative is to wear shorts. It's still a bit chilly out, 30's F, but I don't plan to stand around outside.

This time I got my cast off after two weeks, again because I had developed sores. Nothing too serious, but any foot injury for a diabetic is potential trouble. Other than that, doc thinks the healing is going fine. X-rays next time, 2 weeks.

On a happier note, we bought a new car.smile

Minnesota heros and bums...

I've kind of been glued to olympic coverage all week. There are a lot of Minnesotans competing. After all the hype Lindsey Vonn made good winning gold in the women's downhill. The winning time was 1:44.19.biggrin

On the other hand I have wasted hours watching curling. The mens team is from Minnesota. They should win a gold medal for choking. puke I think they've stolen the Viking's playbook.

I haven't been around for a while. I was never really gone, just a little burnt out. A lot has happened since my last blog.

I broke my foot again. Same foot (left) different bone. I was just walking through the grocery store, and I heard a loud pop. Wearing a cast sucks. I have a new handicapped parking permit.

Our freezer had a meltdown. Someone didn't close the door all the way. I don't think it was me, but it doesn't matter. Probably lost about $150 worth of food. There is still a pile of junk sitting on the deck that needs to go in the trash. I'd like to get that picked up before spring.

Tonight we went out to a new restaurant for a belated Vanentines dinner. Neither of us are really into the whole holiday thing, but we had a great time. The food was spectacular. Four course meal and drinks set us back $100 not including the tip. It may have been the fanciest meal my wife has ever had. I told her it was a warm up for our trip to New York.

At midnight tonight I will officially no longer be handicapped.

I broke my foot back in September, and my doctor got me a temporary handicapped parking permit. When I first got it it was a godsend, but the last month or so I've felt a little guilty using it, as my foot has improved greatly.

It was fun while it lasted, but the party is over.
